We are growing green.
Students chose green as UNT’s color more than a century ago to gain Mother Nature’s favor. And it’s long been more than a school color to us. It’s a sign of our long-running dedication to being environmentally responsible — from our academic programs focused on environmental sustainability to our energy-saving efforts in our eco-friendly buildings. We are leading the way as a sustainable campus — and teaching our students to carry on a lifelong commitment to being green.
Big Campus
UNT has a 900-acre campus that includes:
- 300-acre Discovery Park, the North Texas region’s largest research park
- Mean Green Village, home of Mean Green athletics
- 173 buildings
- 14 residence halls
Growing
With its café and rooftop garden, UNT’s Business Leadership Building is a showcase building for a program on the rise. High-tech amenities, trading rooms and cloud computing make learning easier and greener for budding entrepreneurs and business professionals.
Green Building
UNT’s future University Union, slated to open in 2015 as a campus gathering place, is being built to stringent environmental standards. It will be our sixth LEED-certified building, joining such jewels as Apogee Stadium — the first newly constructed collegiate football stadium in the nation to achieve LEED Platinum Certification, the highest level.
- FIRST: UNT is Texas’ first large public university to sign the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment.
- 4: UNT has been named a Green College by The Princeton Review for four years.
Energy Efficient
- SMALLER “FOODPRINT”: UNT is the nation’s first university to offer a vegan-only dining facility — Mean Greens at Maple Hall — and serves 2.2 million meals a year using the freshest regionally sourced ingredients available.
- $3 million: Under a 20-year energy savings contract, UNT has made 120 existing buildings more energy efficient and will save $3 million annually.
- ENERGY: UNT gets almost half of our energy from renewable sources. Wind turbines help power Apogee Stadium.
- GREENEST: UNT is ranked the greenest college in Texas by eCollegeFinder.
