The Current Population Survey (CPS) is a monthly survey of households conducted by the Bureau of Census for the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It provides a comprehensive body of data on the labor force, employment, unemployment, persons not in the labor force, hours of work, earnings, and other demographic and labor force characteristics.

Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 211,000 in November,
and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 5.0 percent. Job gains
occurred in construction, professional and technical services, and
health care. Mining and information lost jobs.

The unemployment rate for veterans who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed
Forces at any time since September 2001--a group referred to as Gulf War-era II
veterans--declined by 1.8 percentage points over the year to 7.2 percent in 2014.

The union membership rate in 2014 was 11.1 percent, down from 11.3 percent in 2013. The
number of wage and salary workers belonging to unions, at 14.6 million, changed little.
