Workshops, Camps and Masterclasses
Each summer, UNT’s College of Music opens its doors to music students whose ages and levels of experience span a wide range. From elementary school students, to college graduates, students and professionals, those who want to learn more, fine tune their musical skills, or build on their knowledge of music instruction are invited to apply for the College of Music’s summer workshops, many of which offer participants the opportunity to perform in public concerts throughout the summer.

The Collegium presents the opportunity for instrumental music educators of all levels from around the world to meet and discuss common goals, shared concerns and practical solutions with colleagues, performers, and composers. The format is designed to allow maximum flexibility in examining topics that are of paramount interest to the participants. The goal of the Collegium is to help participants broaden their perspectives by providing an environment that creates a positive opportunity for dialogue, investigation and exchange.

13th Annual Pirastro Strings Elite Soloists Program

The Elite Soloists Program will accept only 5 students by audition to study with Jeff Bradetich. Daily lessons and solo classes will be held in a highly individualized program. Last year’s class included participants from major orchestras and young professionals. To apply, send a CD or DVD of two different solo works to Jeff Bradetich, 1155 Union Circle #311367, Denton, TX 76203 by March 1, 2015. Thanks to the generous support of Pirastro Strings, this program offers free tuition, room and board.

Flute! Fundamentals for Teachers is a workshop for performers and teachers. Participants can observe master teaching and interact with both teacher and students in daily sessions. Basics of embouchure, breathing, tone production, articulation, and technique are addressed in classes.

Flute! High School Camp is a class for high school flutists, and these sessions emphasize musical performance and preparation. Daily classes include warmup exercises, tone/technique development, and articulation studies, and provide opportunities for interaction of performer and listener. Flute! Middle School Day Camp

Flute! Middle School Day Camp 2015 is a fun camp for middle school flutists who want to build tone, technique, and performance confidence for next year’s competitions and auditions! Daily sessions include basics of embouchure, breathing, tone production, musical phrasing, articulation, vibrato, and technique. Campers interact with artist Mary Karen Clardy in every session, and flute choir rehearsals add the opportunity to try other members of the flute family (piccolo, alto flute and bass flute) and build ensemble skills, with a final camp concert of music learned during camp and a party for campers, family, and friends!
Flute! Practicum for Performers

Flute! Practicum for Performers 2015 is a masterclass for performers interested in developing performance and repertoire skills. Participants will perform in daily sessions led by artist Mary Karen Clardy, with a focus on standard repertoire and orchestral excerpts. Concepts of breathing, embouchure, tone production, musical phrasing, articulation, vibrato, and technique are addressed in the masterclass.

Alexander Technique

Participants will also have the opportunity to experience Alexander Technique in a workshop setting, taught by Phyllis Richmond, M.A., MSTAT. Ms. Richmond will introduce the principles and practices of Alexander Technique that enable musicians to stop creating unnecessary tension and effort; improve posture, coordination, and breathing; and perform with increased comfort and ease by using the whole body in a new way.
