FM 1938/Davis Boulevard Extension

The FM 1938/Davis Boulevard extension is a new four- to six-lane roadway that connects to SH 114 and consists of two separate projects. The first phase is 2.2 miles of new road from SH 114 to Randol Mill Road and the second phase includes the extension of FM 1938 from Randol Mill Road to FM 1709. Construction was completed on the first phase in August 2012.

The project was awarded a 2009 Highways for Life $1 million grant by the Federal Highway Administration for its use of new innovative technologies that are expected to extend the life of the roadway and enhance air quality.

These new technologies were used and will be studied for potential use in future projects:

  • Optimized graded concrete that resists cracking and produces less carbon dioxide.
  • Improved compaction of base materials provides a more consistent, even roadway surface that is more resistant to failures.
  • Special linings between the base and the pavement reduce erosion and failures.
  • Special pavement curing formulas reduce fine cracking.
  • Improved roadway texturing and grooving provide a more durable road with less noise.

The project was a partnership between TxDOT and Tarrant County, the North Central Texas Council of Governments and the cities of Keller, Southlake and Westlake.

Phase One

Phase One includes a six-lane divided roadway with raised curb medians from SH 114 to just south of Dove Road, then it graduates to a four-lane roadway with raised curb medians to Randol Mill Road. It was completed in August 2012.

Phase Two

Phase two will extend FM 1938 from Randol Mill Road to FM 1709. The $20.6 million project will reconstruct the existing road from one lane in each direction to a four-lane divided roadway with a raised curb medians.

TxDOT and its partners have identified construction methods that will limit the impact to traffic. During construction, one lane will remain open in each direction and work will start after the 2014 holiday season. Occasional lane closures will be necessary.

Expected completion of the 1.6-mile project is estimated for 2017.
