The scope of this proposed project is a 4.5 mile stretch of I-20 from Pine Street to Loop 322 in Abilene. Improvements are planned for both the north and south side of I-20.
Proposed Improvements
This project is a priority for the Abilene Metropolitan Planning Organization and TxDOT because of the safety benefits provided by one-way frontage roads.
Proposed improvements include the following:
Project Funding
The project is estimated to cost $11.3 million. Special funding through Proposition 12 bonds moved the project up on TxDOT's schedule by several years. Last summer, the Texas Legislature authorized the Agency to go to contract on approximately $3 billion in general obligation bonds for highway improvements. The Abilene MPO's allocation of these funds was $3.6 million, and by putting the entire portion toward the project and pairing it with TxDOT's traditional funding, the district was able to move the project forward. Texas voters approved these Proposition 12 bonds, which are backed by the state's general revenue and not fuel tax revenues, in 2007.
