Sept. 13-19 Child Passenger Safety Week

Sept. 13-19 is Child Passenger Safety Week. Car crashes are the leading cause of death for children age 13 and under. Car seats, booster seats and seat belts save lives. In 2013, among children under the age of 5 in cars, an estimated 263 lives were saved by child restraints.
Car seats work best when installed correctly
Most parents are confident that they have correctly installed their child’s car seat, but in most cases (59%) the seat has not been installed correctly. Saturday, September 19 is National Seat Check Saturday. The Teens in the Driver Seat program has partnered with the Texas Department of Public Safety and Safe Kids Austin to host a safety seat check at Highland Mall in Austin, Texas on Sept. 19 from 8 AM to 11 PM. Come out and have a certified technician check your child’s car seat for free. Questions? Email SafeKidsAustin@seton.org.

Tracking changes in seat belt use across Texas

The objective of this project is to conduct surveys on the use of occupant restraint, motorcycle helmet and child restraint devices statewide and in selected urban areas of Texas. The statewide survey and sampling protocol meet the uniform survey criteria adopted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and therefore the results from this survey are used to estimate the annual statewide seat belt and motorcycle-helmet use rate.
