Before a project is built, a study must be done to determine if it will fill a transportation need, will not negatively impact the surrounding area and fits the department's overall plan. During the study phase, potential projects are analyzed to determine if they are cost-effective while also efficiently improving mobility. Some of these projects have moved beyond the study phase and are under construction.

College Station	FM 60 Intersection Project	Improvements to the intersection of Raymond Stotzer Parkway (FM 60), University Drive (FM 60) and Harvey Mitchell Parkway (FM 2818)
College Station	FM 2347 Project	Improvements to the intersection of George Bush Drive, Wellborn Road and the Union Pacific Railroad
College Station	FM 2818 Widening Project	Increase capacity from a four-lane divided roadway to a six-lane divided freeway from University Drive (FM 60) to George Bush Drive (FM 2347)
Grimes County	SH 249 Project	Identify potential route or routes between Todd Mission and Navasota
Madison County	SH 21 West Madison County	Increase capacity from a two-lane undivided roadway to a four-lane divided roadway
Madisonville	SH 21 Relief Route Feasibility Study	A relief route is being studied to increase mobility
Walker County	I-45 Central Walker County Project	Widen interstate to six lanes and other various improvements
