Direct Operating Loans (OL)

FSA had a backlog of more than 2,000 applications for Direct OLs. Funds have been obligated to satisfy those loans. (See chart below for state-by-state obligations) Half of the loans went to beginning and socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers.

Producers unfamiliar with FSA Farm Loan Programs (FLP) are encouraged to visit the FLP Web pages at www.fsa.usda.gov/dafl. In addition to Direct OLs, FLP helps producers with Direct Farm Ownership (FO) loans and Guaranteed OL and FO loans.

The average Direct OL is about $53,000. However, they can reach a legal maximum of $300,000. That amount was increased from $200,000 in the 2008 Farm Bill.

A Direct OL can be used to buy farm equipment, livestock, feed for livestock, seed, fertilizer, fuel, insurance coverage, and repairs to fences and buildings. Other operating expenses also qualify.
