[ - ] WWYD: currently earning low 6 figures working at a company i've been at for 5+ years. earning potential here is not great - have probably hit a ceiling in terms of income. however, with db #1 due in a couple of months, my schedule is somewhat flexible (cannot work from home but can come in late/leave early without issue for the most part). DH is making similar amount to me but with alot of potential to grow. his hours are not as flexible and especially won't be once he advances his career. would you stay at current job although knowing you could make alot more $$ elsewhere? or look for new opportunities once DB is born? 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

There's this 35 year old guy talking massive shit about the companies that his capital firm invests in, saying essentially "they're lazy, we think they could make a lot more money, we expect XXX in returns this year." Is this what that world is like? You spend 30 years giving up family, friends, your health, and everything else to be the CEO, and once you get there you have to take shit from a kid who uses other people's money to bully you around? It seems like a lovely school. I know someone with two children there (in the pre-K and K grades). She really likes it. Because the chart changes as the population changes. One group of children will have different percentiles from another group. I'd take the bonus...but are you sure you want to get the 30 pieces of silver and a snitching "sin" against your karma for reporting some schmuck who just wants to earn a living? [ Reply | More ]

Therein lies the problem. Divert 20% of ICE officers to employer enforcement, and pass laws threatening jail time for employers (even off-book nanny employers) and you'll see a huge change. [ Reply | More ]

"NYC will bear increased costs for health care of undocumented workers and nail salons" Let me guess... written by a Korean nail salon owner. The New Zion Times is going downhill. [ Reply | More ]

...or we can all start paying $25 for our manicures like they do in the fly over states, or just start doing our own nails and stop patronizing these nail sweat shops. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Do you think that the authorities continuously drop the ball on regulating and enforcing labor laws? Aren't they to blame for the misery and illegal conditions that exist in nail spas, restaurants, etc? What would happen if someone reported a probable violation of labor laws and/or immigration laws in a nail salon or a nanny who works illegally for a family? I guess nothing would happen at all! Anytime that a service is available for cheap, people will use it. It's a shame that the authorities don't enforce the laws. I think it's their responsibility. 14 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

The authorities report to us, the citizens who pay their salaries. If they aren't doing a good job, it is ultimately our responsibility to demand that they do better, and to vote out any legislators who aren't backing us up. [ Reply | More ]

That's not what I said. It's an easy answer to say - just vote politicians out office. Laws should be enforced regardless of current political climate. There is a system of checks and balances and the legislative and executive powers are supposed to be separate. [ Reply | More ]

YOu want to report someone's nanny, don't you? Just admit it to yourself. Stop covering the wish to screw some family out of a nanny by mudding the waters with nail salon workers etc [ Reply | More ]

"Not being illegal either. Just saving on taxes" Tax evasion is illegal, so it has to be prosecuted. You seem to be confusing it with tax avoidance, which is legal (not the case when breaking the law hiring people off-the-books). [ Reply | More ]

NP. I am from a country where people routinely report illegal behavior. It wouldn't be inconceivable that a competitor would report another business owner if he hired illegal workers. Police routinely raid suspicious companies. But manicures there cost EUR 30 and only really wealthy people can afford nannies (1/3 of wage goes to employee, 2/3 go to benefit and taxes, so it would cost at least 50k to hire a domestic worker).
