by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(1/13/2015) Red Sox pitchers Wade Miley, Junichi Tazawa and Rick Porcello as well as outfielder Daniel Nava all filed for arbitration Tuesday, reports the Boston Globe. Figures will be exchanged Friday.

Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis gets one-year, $4.25 million deal
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(1/13/2015) The Dodgers agreed to a one-year, $4.25 million contract with catcher A.J. Ellis, avoiding arbitration, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman.

Ellis, who is expected to play a backup role to Yasmani Grandal in 2015, has averaged 114 games over the last three seasons for the Dodgers. He struggled in 2014, batting just .191 with three home runs and 25 RBI in 93 games.

Marlins agree to minor-league deal with Nick Masset
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(1/13/2015) The Marlins have agreed to a minor-league contract with reliever Nick Masset, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman.

The 32-year-old Masset went 2-0 with a 5.80 ERA and 1.78 WHIP in 51 relief appearances for the Rockies in 2014. He had 36 strikeouts in 45 innings.

Orioles' Showalter has been checking in frequently with 3B Machado
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(1/13/2015) Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Tuesday he has kept a dialogue this offseason with third baseman Manny Machado, who is recovering from August knee surgery. Machado will report to Florida on Wednesday to have a checkup on his right knee, per MASNsports.com.

"I get a lot of feedback on him and about him," Showalter said. "I don't sit here and go down a list. I'm going to leave him alone. I asked (third base coach) Bobby Dickerson on the phone today, and he said it's the best he's felt in a long time right now. It's good to hear.

"He's probably not real happy about having to make the trek over here. He doesn't have to make the trek. It's completely voluntary. That's what I told him on the phone."

Cardinals CF Jon Jay expecting no limitations at start of spring camp
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(1/13/2015) Cardinals outfielder Jon Jay said Tuesday he was given the green light to begin workouts after having his surgically repaired wrist examined, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

"It's too early to tell when I'll be 100 percent, but it's a good thing there are seven weeks until spring," Jay said. "That extra 10 days (before spring workouts start this year) is huge. I've already been working. I feel good. I have the time I need. I expect to be ready."

Jay, who is lining up to be the team's starting center fielder, said he expects to participate without limitations at the beginning of spring training.

"Everything looks good," Jay said. "Getting back to full strength is the next step. I don't anticipate anything that would slow me down. I'm optimistic."

Report: Tigers not scouting former Rangers pitcher Alexi Ogando
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(1/13/2015) While several teams were on hand in Tampa to witness former Rangers pitcher Alexi Ogando's throwing session last week, the Tigers were not one of those teams, sources told MLB.com.

Ogando is coming off a shaky campaign in 2014, going 2-3 with a career-worst 6.84 ERA in 27 relief outings for Texas. He was non-tendered in December, making him a free agent.

Orioles' Coolbaugh: Chris Davis is 'going to have a great year'
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(1/13/2015) New Orioles hitting coach Scott Coolbaugh said Tuesday he has supervised a couple of slugger Chris Davis' workouts in Dallas, according to MASNsports.com.

Prior to joining the Orioles' coaching staff, Coolbaugh worked in the Rangers' organization and worked with Davis in the minors leagues, when Davis was with Texas. Davis has welcomed Coolbaugh's addition as he is coming off a disappointing season in 2014.

"It's like anything else," Coolbaugh said. "I think it's getting back to the mental focus of where you want to be, where you come from, get back to that Chris Davis that we know. I think he's going to have a great year and I'm looking forward to spending time with him this year."

Coolbaugh hinted Davis might have put a little too much pressure on himself last season after he belted 53 home runs in 2013.

"Sometimes it's more of the mental thing, that you try to do too much, try to live up to what he did in 2013," he said. "You try to chase what you're doing and those things happen because of a process, not based on chasing results. I think he just got away from that probably a little bit and lost himself."

Rangers ink outfielder Carlos Peguero to minor-league deal
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(1/13/2015) The Rangers announced Tuesday they signed outfielder Carlos Peguero to a minor-league contract, which includes an invite to spring training.

Peguero appeared in just four games for the Royals in 2014. He hit .266 with 30 home runs and 76 RBI in 104 games for Triple-A Omaha.

Royals still expecting Alex Gordon to be ready by season opener
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(1/13/2015) Royals general manager Dayton Moore said Tuesday he is unsure if outfielder Alex Gordon, who underwent wrist surgery in late December, will be 100 percent at the start of spring training, per The Kansas City Star. However, the team expects Gordon to be ready by opening day.

Gordon was an All-Star for a second straight season in 2014. He hit .266 with a .351 on-base percentage, .432 slugging percentage and .783 OPS in 156 games. He hit .204 with one home run, six doubles and 11 RBI in 15 postseason games.

Diamondbacks remain interested in free agent SP James Shields
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(1/13/2015) Diamondbacks general manager Dave Stewart said Tuesday the team remains interested in signing free agent starting pitcher James Shields, according to The Arizona Republic. Stewart said he has spoken multiple times with Shields' agent, Page Odle, to "work on groundwork."

"I think James is a throwback guy by the way he goes about his business and the innings he pitches," Stewart said. "I think the fact that Tony (La Russa) is here and that we have more baseball people -- he probably sees us as a true baseball team vs. some of the other teams out here that are geared more toward analytics and those type of things.

"Sometimes, there are concessions the player will make to be here. It's the case that he likes what we're doing with our organization from our end, all we can hope is that there will be concessions enough that he can be here."

The Diamondbacks agreed to an $8.27 million signing bonus with Cuban pitcher Yoan Lopez on Tuesday. Stewart said the signing puts the Diamondbacks' payroll around $106 million, adding Arizona might have to shed some salary.

"The truth is, I haven't even thought about how," Stewart said. "We'll look at the numbers and look at who we'll have to possibly subtract, if that's what we have to do.

"I would like to be (under $100 million). I've not been told to be, but I would like to be."
