Volunteer Application

Many opportunities exist for citizens to help the animals at Lampasas Animal Shelter. There is a place for you no matter what your interest, skill set, availability, or reason for wanting to help. Volunteers help save the lives of thousands of animals each year by assisting in the direct care of the animals, fundraising, and reaching out to the community. The Lampasas Animal Shelter cares for 2,000- 2,500 animals a year. We provide the training for all volunteer positions, so no prior experience is required.

Expectations of LAS volunteers

• While people come to LAS because they love animals, LAS volunteers must also be able to work well with other people. LAS isn’t just about animals—it’s about people helping animals.

• For everyone’s protection, volunteers must use the safe animal handling techniques taught in their required training.

• All tasks, from cleaning cages to stuffing envelopes, have specific procedures. Volunteers must adhere to these procedures unless a staff member directs them otherwise.

• Once volunteers know their work routines, they are expected to work with minimal supervision. Following through on tasks ensures the animals are receiving the best possible care. Staff are always available to answer questions.

How to get started

• All Volunteers must be 16 years or older to volunteer at the shelter.

• To begin, you must submit a Volunteer Application.

Opportunities

Cat Attendant: Cat Attendants assist staff with cleaning each cat cage in the adoption room while socializing with the cats.
Volunteers must be able to practice safe animal handling, work independently and be receptive to feedback from staff. Duties include: socializing and comforting the cats; giving cats toys; monitoring behavior and medical needs on daily log; cleaning each cat cage in the adoption room; preparing food and feeding cats and kittens; stocking supplies; assisting with dishes; scrubbing litter pans; assisting with laundry; and sweeping and mopping. This job requires repetitious bending and lifting, and volunteers are exposed to various cleaning agents. This position has high animal contact.

Dog Attendant: Dog Kennel Cleaning Assistants help with the cleaning of each dog kennel, while also teaching the dogs basic obedience commands with the goal of making their stay at the shelter more stimulating. Training also helps the dogs make an easier transition into their new homes.

Dog Kennel Cleaning Assistants must practice safe animal handling per LAS protocols and be open to feedback from staff. This position requires a tolerance for loud noise, and volunteers are exposed to various cleaning agents. Volunteers must be comfortable using hoses and scrubbing brushes. This job can be intense and physically demanding, and requires repetitious scrubbing, bending, and lifting.

Duties include: socializing and comforting the dogs; teaching dogs basic obedience commands; monitoring behavior and medical needs on daily log; sanitizing each kennel in the main adoption kennels; scooping poop; washing down kennels with hose; scrubbing each kennel with detergent; bleaching, rinsing kennels; and assisting with dishes, laundry, sweeping and mopping.This is a high animal contact position.

Animal Socializer: Animal Socializers come to be with the animals. Whether you are here for the dogs or cats, the animals love to have the attention. The goal of Animal Socializers is to help make the time the animals spend at the shelter as pleasant as possible. From walking dogs, to brushing the cats, any time spent with the animal is time well spent.

Animal Socializers must practice safe animal handling per LAS protocols and be open to feedback from staff. Duties include: socializing and comforting the dogs or cats; teaching dogs basic obedience commands; monitoring behavior and medical needs on daily log. This is a high animal contact position.

Office Assistant: Office Assistants help with basic computer entry, answering the phones, filing paperwork, and basic cleaning of the shelter’s front desk area. Volunteers must have good computer and customer service skills.
This is a low animal contact position.

Maintenance: Maintenance Volunteer help us maintain the outside of our building. This would entail maintaining the flower beds and mowing around the facility. LAS will provide the equipment.
This is a low animal contact position.

Fundraising/ Off Site Adoptions or other events: Friends of Lampasas Animal Shelter (FLAS) organize all fundraising and educational events within the community. FLAS is a nonprofit that was formed to help the animals housed at this shelter. They provide financial help to animals that are in need and also work in the community to educate the public on animal related matters. There is no age requirement to work with FLAS.
