North Central Texas Clean School Bus Program |
 The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) houses the North Central Texas (NCT) Clean School Bus Program. The NCT Clean School Bus Program is a
fuel-neutral program serving the 16-county NCTCOG service area. It serves as a clearinghouse for information on technology, legislation, best-practices for school bus operators, and clean school bus funding opportunities. The program aims to reduce emissions from school bus fleets by encouraging and assisting in the expedited purchase of clean school buses as well as adoption and enforcement of anti-idling policies. In addition, this program seeks to gather
community resources to assist schools, school districts, and school bus operators
in improving
air quality and protecting the health of school aged children.
Nine counties in the NCT area have been classified as nonattainment for the pollutant ozone by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This means that they do not meet federal air quality standards and are required to take measures to reduce pollution to within acceptable levels. Because of this, and the inherent health impacts of poor air quality, efforts are being made to reduce emissions from all pollution sources, which includes school buses.
The goals of the NCT Clean School Bus Program are to:
- Administer grant funding for eligible projects that reduce emissions from older, high-emitting school buses.
- Provide education materials to schools, school districts, and school bus operators about various clean school bus options that can improve the fleet, benefit the environment, and protect the health of school aged children.
- Promote implementation and enforcement of anti-idling policies for school buses and all other vehicles that operate within a school zone.
