I am tired of being used, hurt, and cast aside.

Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. Most of the infected perished, while many of the children who survived were left with strange markings. Adelina’s black hair turned silver, her lashes went pale, and now she has only a jagged scar where her left eye on

I know who you really are. Who will ever want you, Adelina?

My fury heightens. Everyone. They will cower at my feet, and I will make them bleed.

Two words. Fuck, yeah!

I don't even know how to describe this book. Maybe William Shakespeare's Mistborn? It is not without its flaws, but the love of a book, much like the love of a human, is completely chemistry-based, and for me, this book just clicked. Every so often, the planets align, and Khanh completely loves a book. It happens!

Want to know what happens when Marie Lu does darker and sexier?

Then read this book.

Contrary to what I first believed, this book is not dystopian or post-apocalyptic, but is actually a dark fantasy set in a bleak world full of magic, complex villains and princes looking to reclaim their throne. And it's damn good.

Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of a blood fever that swept through her nation when she was a child. The fever left only a few survivors and those survivors remained permanently scarred

Adelina definitely surprised me.

She's such a strong heroine. The kind we just love to have in our fantasy reads. It’s pretty crazy, to say, how easily she and I clicked. Turns out, even though I don’t believe myself to enjoy or, sometimes, want to hurt people, we have many things in common, such as fighting for what is dear to us, family and always trying our best.

You know when you're talking to someone, and they're looking at you, and their eyes are open, and they nod in all the right places, but you just know that they're not really listening? Sure, the story you're telling is kind of boring, and you had to be there to find it funny, but they're your friend or family member and you expect them to wake the fuck up and listen when you speak. But they don't, and you can't stop talking, because then you'll have to address the fact that they're not listening ...more

3.5 stars Surprisingly dark, with a sister dynamic similar to Cruel Beauty's and a feel similar to that of Masque of the Red Death's. I admit that the middle lagged a bit for me, I didn't love the multiple POV structure, and there is a LOT of activity going on in Adelina's heart (many references to energy spiking in it, her feelings, etc), but I quite like this world the author has created, and am intrigued to see where the story goes next.

One thing the blurbs don't tell you that you find out i

I think someone switched my copy of this book with someone else's. I just can't read this mess. I'm about halfway through it and nothing has happened, well except me sleeping. No awesome world building, MC who got on my nerves..the list goes on.

I will give Marie Lu another chance though, cuz I do like her.

THE YOUNG ELITES by Marie Lu does something remarkable: take old tropes and archetypes but put fresh, unique spins on them. Reading this made me feel like I was in a world that was already familiar, but then she'd sweep the rug out from underneath me and change things completely!

Adelina Amouterou is a malfetto; meaning, she is marked and ostracized by her community for surviving a virus that made so many others perish before her. She is marked in more ways than one– she lost her eye to the viru

I only have one regret. And that's starting this book so soon after it was published. There isn't even a set date for book 2. I don't think I'll make it.

3.5 stars. This could have been so easily a 5 stars read for me. *sigh*

It is indeed a very beautiful story. The writing is as amazing as Marie Lu can write, the world is strongly built, the vivid images created by the powers of the Elites are marvellous, the characters are unique and fleshed-out at the border of becoming real, and Adelina is such a great lead with her emotional past and her trust issues (as it makes for an unpredictable storyline).
But..

Let’s make things clear:

This book is one of my most highly anticipated books of the year, and it did not disappoint. I love it so so much.

What makes this book unique, is how dark and gritty it is. The main character, Adelina, went through unimaginable horrors before the book even begins. This leaves her with a deep-rooted darkness in her soul. Adelina is not the pure heroine of most YA books, she has so many issues to work through, and she has to find the strength to do this. It is a struggle for her throughout t

I'm really, really not sure how to review this one. So let me give you a conversation I think I would have with the book and the characters if they were real and could talk (plus a bit of what the book is about if you guys are curious):

If there’s one thing I like more than the psychology behind an outright villain, it’s an antihero who dips for too long in the grey areas, who seeks for redemption despite being beyond it, who tarnishes the average hero’s journey.

I understand that this book didn’t sit well with many because of the characters. They’ve all got mixed morals. I, however, thrive off that. While it may turn some off , this elevated The Young Elites onto a pedestal amongst this sea of conventionalism and made me bru

MY PRECIOUS! Where have you been all my life, my precious?

The Young Elites is a concoction of rich settings, dark flavours of fantasy, outstanding characterizations, smooth, honey-like writing style and a dash of sexiness. It stole my breath away from the very beginning. The best thing about this book (to be honest, there are a lot of great things about this book but I will narrow it down for you) is its characters.

Aren't you bored of reading the same old goody characters who fight for what is r

After reading Legend, when I heard Marie Lu was coming out with a new series I just knew I had to read it. This woman is a fantastic author with great imagination and a knack for character development. This one was much more fantasy that I usually read, though, so it was less my taste, but it was still an entertaining ride that I think will captivate a lot of readers of the genre.

We begin this journey with a look into the heartbreaking story of Adelina's upbringing. A gi

I think I love Marie Lu even more for writing this. Thank you! This is going to be a great series, I can already tell. Especially since she described it as a mix between X-Men and Assassin's Creed 2 meets Game of Thrones; that sounds beyond epic.

And Adelina Amouteru, the protagonist! I can't even attempt to even with her! Marie describes her as, "a bit like a teenage female version of Magneto and Darth Vader. She is not a nice girl. She has twisted opinions about the world and the people around

WOW. Honestly amazing, one of the coolest fantasy books I've read in a while. I've been a HUGE fan of Marie since long before Legend, book 1 in her dystopain trilogy, hit shelves several years ago. Marie was so kind and sent me an ARC of LEGEND, and it blew me away.

Needless to say, I was thrilled when I found out about this new series. And it didn't let me down!

I love how well done Adelina's story was. It's unique in the sense that Adelina isn't the "good guy". She is, in fact, incredibly dark,

You did not beat me book. I have conquered you and I win.

It's official: I found this book to be boring. I would rather eat a chainsaw than read this book again.

It's been a really long time since I've dozed off while reading a book and I can honestly say that it was nice to have that feeling once again.

I discovered that this book wasn't dystopian and I jumped on it. I was told that it was high fantasy. But then I read it. I think people are confusing this with high fantasy. It's not really high f

Some writers have an elegant almost lyrical flow to their writing style that draws you into the story and some just know how to tell a great story. Marie Lu is the later for me. I might find her writing style a little clipped and possibly statement oriented but I’m always drawn into the story she tells. I enjoyed her Legend Series and I might enjoy her Young Elites series even more. It is definitely a change-up, with darker characters and even more sinister plots.
