On this date: Seahawks win NFC title

Paul Allen

A look at some memorable moments in Seahawks history that occurred on Jan. 22:

1992: Bob Bratkowski is named quarterbacks coach on Tom Flores’ staff. Bratkowski had been the offensive coordinator at the University of Miami, a position he would later hold with the Seahawks on Dennis Erickson’s staff.

2006: The Seahawks not only play in their first NFC Championship Game, they host the game and win it 34-14 over the Panthers as Shaun Alexander rushes for 132 yards and two touchdowns, Matt Hasselbeck throws for two scores and the defense intercepts three passes. The decisive victory sends the Seahawks to Super Bowl XL. The game, and everything surrounding it, was named the top moment in the first 10 seasons at the team’s state-of-the-art stadium that opened in 2002.

2007: Bruce DeHaven is named special teams coach on Mike Holmgren’s staff.

2009: Tim Lewis, the brother of Seahawks’ director of pro personnel Will Lewis, is named defensive backs coach on Jim Mora’s staff.

Russell Wilson added to NFC Pro Bowl squad

Russell Wilson

Add another item to Russell Wilson’s already impressive rookie-season resume: Pro Bowl quarterback.

Wilson was added to the NFC squad today when Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan was forced to drop out after injuring his left shoulder during Sunday’s loss to the 49ers in the NFC Championship game. Wilson was the third alternate at his position when the team was named last month.

The Redskins’ Robert Griffin III and Packers’ Aaron Rodgers also were voted to the NFC squad, but each has dropped out of the Pro Bowl, also due to injuries, and been replaced by the Saints’ Drew Brees and the Giants’ Eli Manning.

Wilson will be heading to Honolulu this week for Sunday’s NFL all-star game, where the rookie QB will join teammates Russell Okung, Max Unger, Marshawn Lynch, Leon Washington and Earl Thomas. They were voted berths on the NFC squad, Okung and Unger as the starters at left tackle and center; Washington as the kick returner; Lynch as the backup at running back to the Vikings’ Adrian Peterson; and Thomas as the backup free safety to the 49ers’ Dashon Goldson, although Goldson won’t play in the Pro Bowl because the 49ers advanced to the Super Bowl.

Wilson led the Seahawks to an 11-5 record during the regular season and then the franchise’s first road playoff victory since 1983 when they beat the Redskins in a wild-card game. Along the way, Wilson threw 26 touchdown passes to tie the NFL rookie record and also broke the mark for rookie passer rating (100.0).

Seahawks sign 10 to future contracts

Phil Bates

The Seahawks have signed 10 players to future contracts, including eight who spent time on the practice squad this season – wide receivers Phil Bates and Bryan Walters, cornerbacks Chandler Fenner and Ron Parker, running back Derrick Coleman, tight end Cooper Helfet, linebacker Kyle Knox and defensive tackle Myles Wade.

Also signed were linebacker Korey Toomer, a fifth-round draft choice last year; and wide receiver Stephen Williams, who was with the Cardinals in training camp last summer but waived/injured in August.

These future signings can be insignificant moves. But in the past two years, players signed by the Seahawks in January included cornerback Brandon Browner, who has become a starter and played in Pro Bowl last year; guard Paul McQuistan, who started all 16 games this season and 10 last season; and wide receiver Charly Martin, who played in four games this season before being placed on injured reserve.
