Brilliantly crisp display

NEW – The high-resolution display (300 ppi) features sharp, dark text that reads even more like the printed page. The micro-etched glass screen is crafted to eliminate glare and feel like paper to the touch.

Effortless page turns

NEW – PagePress allows you to turn the page without lifting a finger. Simply apply pressure on the bezel to turn the page, and PagePress will provide a silent haptic response for consistent and immediate feedback.

Light that adjusts with you

NEW – Kindle Voyage can be read in sunlight or total darkness—and it's smart enough to know the difference. With a new adaptive front light, Kindle Voyage senses the light in your environment and changes the setting to the ideal brightness.

Remarkably thin design

Comfortably hold Voyage in one hand for long reading sessions.

PagePress sensors with haptics

PagePress is a custom-designed force sensor made of carbon and silver, which reacts to a subtle increase of pressure, triggers a page-turn and provides a haptic response only your thumb can perceive. Because PagePress has no moving parts, the haptics provide you with the most minimal indication that you have pressed the button, to reduce distraction from reading.

Adaptive front light

In order to more closely resemble reading on real paper, we researched and hand-tuned the optimal brightness setting for every lighting condition. The new adaptive front light automatically adjusts the brightness of the display based on your environment, and can even be fine-tuned further to your personal preferences. When reading in the dark, the adaptive front light slowly lowers the display’s brightness over time to match the way the eye responds to darkness.

An unparalleled 300 ppi display

Kindle Voyage features the brightest, highest resolution, and highest contrast display of any Kindle. The micro-etched glass display diffuses light to eliminate glare and matches the feel of paper.

Sleek yet durable design

Kindle Voyage was designed to come one step closer to a sheet of paper, with a flush-front bezel for a clean, streamlined design. With a magnesium back and a chemically-reinforced glass front, Kindle Voyage is both durable and sleek.

I bought the Kindle Voyage (KV) 10 months ago so have had plenty of time to asses it versus my Kindle Keyboard (KK), which I have used happily for several years and still do owing to its superior page turning system (qv). My wife has a Kindle Paperwhite (PW) which she uses every day and rates very highly, I have also installed the excellent Kindle free App on both my smartphone and tablet. Uptil recently the KV had a higher resolution screen (300 ppi) than the PW, but now they are the same. I find that you don't actually need a specially high resolution to read a book so in my left hand I am holding my KK, and in my right hand the KV both turned to the same page in the same book. I can view and read them with equal pleasure because although obviously different, (the KK res is only 167 ppi versus KV 300), the 'thinner' looking KV text (some people like to call it 'crispy' as if reviewing a box of cream crackers!), does not on its own directly equate to more reading pleasure - after all, we are not trying to decypher ancient hieroglyphs!, and if anything I find the bolder looking text of the KK easier to read, especially against the v clear and even non - backlit background - the effect is quite beautiful! Therefore anyone on a limited budget who does not wish to fork out more than £50-60 and is attracted to the basic Kindle , should not be put off by the issue of screen resolution.
So turning to the 2 extra features the KV does have versus the PW - the new page press system and auto control of the screen illumination - are they worth paying £60 more than the PW?
I tried very hard to like the new PP system for a period of four months and experimented with all the pressure and feedback settings to try and optimise it.

I own the Kindle Keyboard (`KK'), the Kindle Paperwhite 2 (i.e. 2013's model) (`PW2') and now the Kindle Voyage (in effect, the Kindle Paperwhite 3). I will compare the three and give my opinion on whether the upgrade is worth it. I will also give my personal opinion on whether or not paying extra for the 3G version (of this or any Kindle) is worth it. As some people will be new to the Kindle, I will cover a few basics first.

1. BASICS - WHY BUY A KINDLE?

It used to be the case that there was, arguably, not much of an advantage of a Kindle over physical books. Kindle books used to be virtually the same price as new paperbacks, which always seemed wrong, and paperbacks had the advantage that you could pass them on after you had read them.

The game changer, in my opinion, was the Kindle Paperwhite due to its frontlight. At that point, Kindles offered a distinct advantage over paperbacks - you could read books in the dark (with a light so subtle that it is unlikely to wake up your partner in bed). But the frontlight goes beyond that - it improves reading indoors in daylight, and makes the screen appear more white, like paper (without the light, the screen looks green or grey). The frontlight can be found on the Paperwhite 1, Paperwhite 2 & Voyage.

What also changed was the pricing - Kindle books started to cost less than paperbacks, often significantly so. Further, Amazon runs sales regularly (for example a Summer Sale, Autumn Sale, Christmas Sale, Spring Sale etc. - they even had one for the Golden Jubilee) where books are discounted, often to approximately 99p. Amazon also runs a Daily Deal where books are discounted until midnight (they started with one book per day; now it tends to be three or more). Recently it has added a Monthly Deal.

One trick pony and Return of the prodigal son
=====================================
I am a confirmed e-reader, having given up paper books many, many moons ago. I love being able to carry my entire library around with me and I certainly don't miss the smell or feel of paper. My first Kindle was a Kindle Keyboard (3rd generation), bought around about five years ago and I loved it. I moved on to tablet-based e-reading (Kindle for Android) and eventually ditched the KK altogether about a year or two ago. I have become a little dissatisfied with tablet e-reading however; my Galaxy Tab's battery life is OK, I suppose, but any sort of intensive use drains it so that a recharge during the day becomes inconveniently necessary. The Tablet also holds many distractions and my reading rate and volume has dropped off significantly and the difficulty of reading on a tablet in full sunlight is also well documented.

So, I picked my KK up again and instantly fell back in love with the Kindle experience. I did feel the need to upgrade, however, and decided on a whim to treat myself to a new Kindle.

What's inna box?
==============
Not a lot. The rather lush-looking box is no larger than a medium sized paperback book and it contains a Kindle (thank goodness!) and a USB lead. There's no charger - this is sold separately, which may be an irritation to some, but then there can't be many people who don't have small hordes of USB chargers clogging up their bed side table drawers these days. There's a warranty leaflet and an instruction booklet. This latter is fairly large but, on inspection, the instructions are limited to a single full page diagram of the Kindle and a sparse page telling you how to turn it on. All the instructions are on the device itself.
