Ohio Bartender Accused of Plotting to Kill House Speaker John Boehner

The bartender, fired last year, blamed Boehner for his troubles and Ebola

A former bartender of House Speaker John Boehner plotted to kill him, federal authorities claim, according to a new report.

Michael Robert Hoyt was arrested and indicted on charges related to an alleged plot that involved poisoning Boehner’s drink, or shooting him and driving off, WCPO reported Tuesday. Authorities said Hoyt, who had worked at a country club that Boehner frequented for five years, called 9-1-1 in October after he was fired and blamed his troubles on the Ohio Republican.

Hoyt allegedly told the operator he was Jesus Christ and accused Boehner of being responsible for the Ebola outbreak. The 44-year-old is also said to have noted that voices told him Boehner was evil, and that he had a loaded Beretta .380 automatic ready to use against him. At the time, police placed him on a 72-hour psychiatric hold.

Boehner’s spokesman Michael Steel released a statement Tuesday, saying “Speaker Boehner is aware of this situation, and sincerely thanks the FBI, the Capitol Police and local authorities in Ohio for their efforts.”

Watch DiCaprio and De Niro Finally Star Together in a Funny (Fake) Martin Scorsese Short

Scorsese makes the two actors compete for the same role

After starring in many a Martin Scorsese film individually, Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro are finally getting to star alongside each another in a “trailer” for a film that, well — turns out to nothing more than a very real commercial.

The “film,” which advertises the City of Dreams Manila casino, is called The Audition, in which Scorsese has DiCaprio and De Niro — two of his favorite lead actors from two phases of his career — compete for the same role.

The teaser trailer is a series of advertisements for the extravagant Manila Bay, Philippines casino, that reportedly shelled out $70 million for the marketing campaign.

Man Arrested at China Border With 94 iPhones Strapped to His Body

Customs officials had noticed he was walking strangely

A Hong Kong citizen was arrested at China’s border after officials found 94 iPhones strapped to his body.

The man attached the Apple iPhone 6 and 6 Plus models onto his torso and legs using plastic bags and masking tape, Sina News reported Monday. The phones have been seized by customs officials, who frequently see people smuggling iPhones into China. Officials had stopped the man when they saw him walking strangely.

Smuggling iPhones is a common but prohibited practice in mainland China, where electronics tend to be more expensive than those sold in neighboring regions like Hong Kong. Even after the products are made available in China, many people, some of them hired, smuggle in foreign-bought electronics to evade import taxes before reselling them for a profit.

Samsung’s New Ultra-Slim Galaxy A7 Is Totally Metal

Samsung Galaxy A7

It's thinner than the iPhone 6

Samsung unveiled Monday its thinnest smartphone to date: The Galaxy A7.

The Galaxy A7 clocks in at a 6.3mm thickness with a full aluminum unibody. It also expands on social capabilities with a new ‘Auto Selfie’ mode, noise reduction for voice control and LTE Category 4 4G for faster data speeds, Samsung said in a statement.

Additional features on the A7, which runs on Android 4.4 KitKat, include an extra security layer for important files and documents and multi-screen capability for convenient multitasking. Samsung will also offer a dual SIM model in some countries to let users have two phone numbers, which is common in South and Southeast Asia where it’s cheaper to make calls between customers of the same wireless company.

With a 5.5 inch screen, the A7 is also the biggest screen phone in the Samsung’s Alpha series, which include the Galaxy A5 and the Galaxy A3. The A7’s size puts it in competition with Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus, whose screen is also 5.5 inches across. But the A7 wins on thinness — the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are 6.9 mm and 7.1 mm, respectively.

The A7’s exact prices and release date have not yet been announced.

Pope Francis Reaffirms Support of Public Breast-Feeding

He told a group of mothers not to worry if they needed to feed their babies during a baptism ceremony at the Sistine Chapel

Pope Francis encouraged mothers to breast-feed their children as they wished on Sunday while he baptized 33 infants in the Sistine Chapel.

“You mothers give your children milk and even now, if they cry because they are hungry, breast-feed them, don’t worry,” he said, which was a departure from his prepared text, NBC reported.

Pope Francis previously expressed his support of public breast-feeding in December 2013 during an interview with La Stampa, in which he said:

There was a young mother behind one of the barriers with a baby that was just a few months old. The child was crying its eyes out as I came past. The mother was caressing it. I said to her: Madam, I think the child’s hungry. “Yes, it’s probably time…” she replied. “Please give it something to eat!” I said. She was shy and didn’t want to breast-feed in public, while the Pope was passing. I wish to say the same to humanity: Give people something to eat!

The Pope’s view on breast-feeding is a big win for those championing the right to breast-feed in public, which isn’t always met with support. In the U.S., for example, while most states permit public breast-feeding, many mothers have been asked to step into a restroom or to cover up. Several controversies have also arisen when public breast-feeding is depicted in the media.

Here’s How J.K. Rowling Responded to Rupert Murdoch’s Anti-Muslim Tweet

Murdoch said even peaceful Muslims have a "growing jihadist cancer"

J.K. Rowling wasn’t pleased with Rupert Murdoch’s tweet about holding all Muslims responsible for terrorism in the wake of the Paris attacks.

The News Corp CEO blamed all Muslims for “growing jihadist cancer” in a tweet posted Friday, following the deadly ambush on the office of satire magazine Charlie Hebdo last week. (al-Qaeda’s Yemen branch claimed responsibility for the attack, but U.S. officials said Sunday there is no credible information yet on which group is responsible.)

The Harry Potter author had something to say about Murdoch’s views on Islam.

Rowling also tweeted sarcastically to take responsibility for the Spanish Inquisition and Jim Bakker, a conservative American televangelist who served time in prison and infamously faced rape and fraud allegations while preaching on Christian values.

Tiffany & Co. Jewelry Ad Campaign Features Its First Gay Couple

Tiffany & Co.

Latest major fashion company to depict same-sex couples

Jeweler Tiffany & Co. is featuring a same-sex couple for the first time in its advertising history.

The two men depicted in the “Will You?” campaign are a real-life couple, CNN reports. The campaign was shot by fashion photographer Peter Lindbergh and features six other couples.

The ads are meant to broaden the 178-year-old jeweler’s portrayals of marriage, Tiffany & Co. said. For example, another pairing shows a couple with their child during their wedding, a nod to people who have children outside marriage.

“Nowadays, the road to marriage is no longer linear,” a company spokeswoman said in a statement. “True love can happen more than once with love stories coming in a variety of forms.”

In recent years, several other major fashion companies have also featured same-sex couples, including Gap, Banana Republic and J. Crew.
