Jan. 14, 1967: The Human Be-In

The Summer of Love actually got its start in the winter, with an event at San Francisco's Golden Gate Park known as the "Human Be-In," which drew 10,000 hippies to sing, watch performances and listen to speeches by people like Timothy Leary (seen here) and Allen Ginsberg, who, TIME remarked that year, had "survived the transition from beat to hip."

"Not a single fight marred the Be-In, and as the sun went down (to the sullen wail of Ginsberg blowing a conch shell), the forgathered hippies quietly cleared every bit of litter from the park," TIME wrote. "Officials later said that they had never seen so large a crowd leave so clean a field."

Johnny Cash at Folsom: Jan. 13, 1968

"Country Singer Cash, a top concert attraction at Manhattan's Carnegie Hall as well as Nashville's Grand Ole Opry is a big favorite in the penitentiary circuit," TIME observed in 1968, when the recording of his appearance at Folsom Prison was released. "We bring the prisoners a ray of sunshine in their dungeon," Cash told TIME, "and they're not ashamed to respond."

The magazine took a guess at why that might be: "Cash, lean and tough looking at 36, sings with granite conviction and mordant wit about sadness, pain, loneliness and hard luck. Though he is not an ex-con himself, his empathy with jailbirds is a natural extension of the attitude expressed in his songs, that life both in and out of prison is a kind of sentence to be served."

It was eight years ago, on Jan. 9, 2007, that Steve Jobs introduced the world to the iPhone. Our ways of communication—and procrastination—haven't been the same since.

"Apple's new iPhone, which will be available in June, could do to the cell-phone market what the iPod did to the portable-music-player market: crush it pitilessly beneath the weight of its own superiority," TIME reported shortly after. "This is unfortunate for anybody else who makes cell phones, but it's good news for those of us who use them."
