Business intelligence software company Adaptive Insights Inc. named Thomas Bogan as chief executive, completing a leadership transition that began last July when former CEO John Herr stepped back to become a senior adviser.

Mr. Bogan is the chairman of Citrix Systems Inc. and Black Duck Software Inc. and sits on the boards of several other companies. He said he will be scaling back his commitments and working at Adaptive full time. Mr. Herr, who was named CEO in 2011, couldn’t be reached for comment.

Adaptive was founded in 2003 by Rob Hull, who is now chairman, and makes cloud-based software aimed at helping chief financial officers with budgeting, forecasting and analytics, “doing to Hyperion what Salesforce has done to Siebel,” Mr. Hull said.

In February 2014, the company changed its name from Adaptive Planning to Adaptive Insights to reflect a broader product focus.

Mr. Bogan said he will be spending his first 90 days meeting with customers to understand how they are using the product and “what they’d like to see us do more effectively” as well as meeting Adaptive’s team.

New team members include President and Chief Revenue Officer Keith Nealon and Audit Committee Chairman Jim Kelliher, who were named to their positions in July, and Karen Pisha, who was named senior vice president of customer success in December.

The company has raised about $100 million from investors including Bessemer Venture Partners, Cardinal Venture Capital, Monitor Ventures, Norwest Venture Partners , Onset Ventures, RBC Venture Partners and Salesforce.com Inc., and says it is considering going public, although no timetable has been set. Mr. Bogan said he hasn’t ruled out raising another private round.

Competitors include public companies such as Oracle Corp., SAP SE and International Business Machines Corp. and venture-backed companies such as Tidemark Inc., Host Analytics Inc. and Anaplan Inc.
