Upper Caney Creek Falls

    Newer Older

Due to some schedule changes in my trip to Arkansas last week for a wedding, I had the chance to stop by The Bankhead National Forest in northern Alabama and visit Upper Caney Creek Falls (I've been wanting to see this one for quite awhile now). The falls is about 45 minutes north of Jasper, AL, which was right on my route to Wynne, AR. Even thought the forecast called for bright sunny skies, clouds still blanketed the area when I arrived around 11 AM. Immediately upon getting out of my car, a strange dog ran up to me (looked like some sort of German Shepherd mix), and tried to jump in my trunk while I packed my camera gear into the bag. For a second there I thought I was going to end up getting mauled. Thankfully, that didn't happen! I did have a companion on the relatively short hike (probably 2 miles round-trip), as the dog followed me all the way to the falls. Once again, I wasn't mauled along the way, so I consider that a success!

The Falls is much bigger than the pictures I've seen implied. The total height is probably over 20 feet, while the pool is very large and deep. The deep cyan color is a unique facet of the area, probably caused by dissolved minerals gained by the water flowing over what looked to be some type of limestone. I hope to return to this falls and explore the area sometime in the summer, when the foliage around the falls is much more lush! Additional water flow wouldn't hurt, either, to bring out the lower left cascade and the double falls on the right.
