OSM Introduces New Version of Worldwide Software Release

The Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM), in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Geological Survey, formally released the latest version of its water treatment software package that provides scientists with a way to economically and dependably create active and passive treatment plans. The software package has provided communities around the world with significant savings while also eliminating serious threats to local environments.

OSM Provides Grant to Flight 93 Memorial to Prevent Coal Mine Related Pollution, Improve Site for Visitors

In October 2012, the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement made available more than $300,000 to the Flight 93 National Memorial, which honors the passengers and crew that prevented terrorists from flying a Boeing 757 jetliner into its reputed target, Washington, D.C., on September 11, 2001.

The grant will provide a way to help clean up acid mine drainage water from an underground coal mine near the crash site, while also providing for a better visiting experience for those who tour the memorial.

OSM Grants $312,000 to Improve Water Quality at Flight 93 Memorial

The National Park Service (NPS) announced the continued effort to improve the water quality of Lamberts Run, a stream bisecting the Flight 93 National Memorial that flows into the Stonycreek River in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

A $312,000 grant from the Department of Interior’s Office of Surface Mining to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources will ultimately construct a settling bed to filter iron and manganese from the pumped well discharge.

Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement Extends Deadline for 2012 Active Mine Reclamation Award Nominations to March 30

The Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM) has extended the deadline for submitting nominations for its annual award program recognizing the best examples of reclaiming coal mines. Nominations for the Excellence in Surface Mining Reclamation Awards are now due to state regulatory authorities or the OSM field office in non-primacy states by March 30.
