Hour 1
[REBROADCAST] The American lottery could have as many characteristics as its states. The 42 states that have a lottery use the money differently - some use the proceeds to fund government, churches and universities. The Pennsylvania Lottery is the only state that uses all its proceeds towards programs for older residents. In the hopes of having the rest of one's life paid for by one ticket, Americans spend billions of dollars a year playing Dailies, Multi-State Games, Quick Picks, Instant Games and others. Journalist MATTHEW SWEENEY looks at the history and patterns of the American Lottery in his book, "The Lottery Wars."

Hour 2 Until recently, historians have been reluctant to talk about the roots of Jewish economic life for fear that such research would fuel anti-semitism. Today, we talk with two scholars about the role of Jews in commerce. Their work has been the topic of a year-long project at the University of Pennsylvania where they are both visiting scholars. Our guests are JONATHAN KARP, a professor Judaic Studies and History at Binghamton University, SUNY and ADAM TELLER from the University of Haifa.
