State Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa proudly represents the people of District 20 in the Texas Senate. Senator Hinojosa served in the Texas House of Representative for 17 years prior to his election to the Texas Senate in 2002. He currently chairs the Texas Senate Hispanic Caucus.
Hinojosa served his country with distinction in the U.S. Marines as a squad leader in the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1968. He earned his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Texas-Pan American and later received his law degree from Georgetown University in 1974.
Hinojosa, a native of South Texas, returned home to serve as a staff attorney for the Legal Aid Society of Nueces County and as an Assistant Attorney General for the Office of the Attorney General. After returning to South Texas, he served as staff attorney for the Legal Aid Society of Nueces County and as an Assistant Attorney General for the Office of the Attorney General. In 1980, he began his private practice in McAllen.
During his tenure, Senator Hinojosa has garnered honors from a variety of organizations for his service to his constituency and the State of Texas. Texas Monthly has twice named Senator Hinojosa to the publication's "Top 10 Legislators" for his all-around excellence as a member of the Texas Legislature, as well as an Honorable Mention in 2007 for the Senator's work to begin reforming the Texas Youth Commission.
Hinojosa is practices law in South Texas, handling civil and criminal matters for a variety of clients.
