If I'm moving slowly at Sunday's California International Marathon, I'm not tired. I'm just studying the race's economic impact.

Yes, really.

I'll join thousands of runners at the race, which organizers say is the largest single-day sporting event in the Sacramento area. Now in its 32nd year, the marathon travels 26.2 miles from Folsom Dam to the state Capitol. The day also includes a relay and 2.62-mile run.

Throughout its existence, the event has drawn participants from all 50 states. Nearly 40 countries have been represented.

The marathon provides an economic boost to the region. How much of an economic boost? Consider these numbers, which include business facts and equally critical information.

  • 7,000— estimated number of marathon finishers this year
  • 3,000— hotel rooms the event is expected to fill
  • 553— portable toilets the race will use
  • 5,000— brownie bites along the race course
  • $75,000— dollars raised for local charities through the event's charity entry program
  • 625— gallons of soup Whole Foods Market will supply for the race
  • 64— tubs of Vaseline available for runners to help chafing
  • 29— bands that will perform along the course
  • 30— number of race sponsors
  • 64,800— safety pins the race will offer
  • 6,000— gallons of Nuun electrolyte fluid along the course
  • 3,500— beers available from Erdinger in the beer garden
  • 30,000— non-alcoholic recovery drink samples Erdinger plans to offer
  • 5,000— number of Band-Aids the race will supply
  • $150,000— dollars provided to local city services in conjunction with the race
  • 12— streakers expected at the race
