3 Quick Steps: Model, Practice, Reinforce

Friday January 9, 2009
When you are trying to help learners of any age with the various concepts in mathematics, a quick strategy to remember is Model, Practice and Reinforce. To model, means think aloud as you pose the question, model the thinking process you use. Model how you would solve the problem/question. Have the learners do the same, do a few questions or problems together making sure that both learner and instructor model aloud the strategies being considered to solve the problem. Once prior knowledge has been tapped in during the modeling process, it's time to practice. Practice questions or problems should help solidify the concept. Then it's time to reinforce the concept. This is done by applying the knowledge authentically and in new situations or when the need arises. If reinforcement doesn't go well, it's time to start the process over.
