Farm to Market 306 serves as the primary carrier route for those headed to historic Gruene or recreational Canyon Lake. In fact, about 20,000 cars use FM 306 from Interstate 35, and about 8,000 of those cars continue to the Canyon Lake area. Since 2010, TxDOT has added turn lanes and passing lanes on FM 306 north of Canyon Lake with the promise of more on the way. During 2012 funding was secured through local partnerships to build bridges over Union Pacific Rail Road tracks near I-35.

All this work has culminated in more than $35 million in road work to be done by Hunter Industries, of San Marcos. This work is divided into two projects.

A 15-month effort to widen the roadway on the northeast side of Canyon Lake includes five dedicated turn lanes and passing lanes. These improvements will improve safety for those using this road, resulting in a more viable economic corridor. This project began in December 2012.

The overpasses at the UPRR crossings will take two years and include the addition of roadway lanes on FM 306. When finished, the road will feature two lanes in each direction up to Hunter Road and no longer require road traffic to interact with rail traffic. This work began early 2013.
