Project Overview

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and the Tyler Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) have allocated construction funds for improvements to Spur 248 between Old Omen Road and SH 64 east of Tyler. These improvements will help the City of Tyler expand the east-west corridor in anticipation of future growth.

Details

Enhancements to this heavily travelled corridor between Tyler and Chapel Hill include:

  • Widening from a two-lane road to a four-lane divided highway with curb and gutter to accommodate expected growth in traffic
  • Adding a center left-turn lane to provide additional safety for drivers
  • Adding a traffic signal at FM 848

The project will require the acquisition of new right of way.

Get Involved

A public meeting was held July 9, 2013, to present three widening alternatives for the project. After reviewing the comments from the public and evaluating the impacts of each alternative, TxDOT is presenting Alternative No. 1 as the recommended alignment. This alternative widens the road evenly on both sides of the existing alignment.

TxDOT held a second public meeting March 25, 2014. Public comments have been evaluated, and schematic drawings are being prepared.

Schedule

An environmental assessment – a review of possible impacts the project could have on the environment – is under way. Environmental clearance from the Federal Highway Administration is expected in summer 2015. Right-of-way acquisition will begin in 2016. Right-of-way acquisition and construction plans should be complete in 2018. Current financial forecasts show the construction funds would be available in fiscal year 2020.
