US 281 and Loop 1604 Intersection

Today the intersection of US 281 and Loop 1604, two major highways in San Antonio, requires traffic to stop at a traffic light before leaving one and entering the other. Hundreds of crashes happen at this location each year because of the volume of stop-and-go traffic.

Relief is planned for this area in the form of four non-toll direct connectors that will link US 281 on the south side of Loop 1604. Once constructed, these connectors will accommodate approximately 50,000 cars per day.

As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), also known as the Federal Stimulus program, the Alamo Regional Mobility Authority received $140 million in funding to construct this project. The project is unique to the San Antonio area as the Alamo RMA, not the Texas Department of Transportation, is the oversight agency for the construction.

In April 2010 the Alamo RMA Board of Directors awarded Williams Brothers Construction Company the contract to design and construct this project. They will only build the four connectors on the southern side of Loop 1604.

Plans to build the four northern connectors are in the near future.
