SH 249 - Todd Mission to Navasota

The purpose of this project is to identify a potential route or routes for SH 249 between Todd Mission and Navasota.

The recommended study area for the proposed project was presented at an open house last October. More than 230 people showed, and we received over 40 comments. Based on the comments from the open house, TxDOT used feedback to help identify additional environmental constraints for design considerations. After the open house, an evaluation process was started to identify potential routes and to compare the routes against the project purpose and needs.

There are six alternatives currently under review (please see maps that were presented at the open house on April 3, 2014). TxDOT has identified and is proposing a recommended new roadway alternative that will be tolled.

Project Benefits

The proposed improvements are expected to provide the following, as outlined in the purpose and needs identified in the SH 249 Working Group Recommendations Report:

  • Improve safety: Crash rates on FM 1774 and SH 105 exceed the statewide average
  • Address traffic growth: Since 1980, traffic has increased 274 percent on FM 1774 and 197 percent on SH 105
  • Improve regional connections: Provide transportation system continuity to surrounding area
  • Address evacuation needs: Increase evacuation capacity during emergencies

Next Steps

  • Public hearing, mid-2014
  • Environmental decision, anticipated late 2014
  • Construction, estimated for 2015
