Work Zone and Dynamic Signs

Description

As the name implies, the emphasis of the Work Zone and DMS program is two-fold. Researchers in the program focus on improving motorist safety, worker safety, and traveler mobility in all types of highway work zones. Researchers also work to improve traveler understanding and the overall effectiveness of dynamic message signs (DMS), sometimes referred to as changeable message signs (CMS) or variable message signs (VMS), used on highways throughout the country.

In 1997, researchers in the program entered into a relationship with the American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) to help develop the National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse (http://www.workzonesafety.org/) and operate it at TTI. This highly-successful relationship continues today.

Expertise

Staff within the program have strong backgrounds in several disciplines, including transportation engineering, human factors, and sociology. Combined, program researchers have over 90 years of TTI service. Researchers in the program are active on multiple technical committees within the Transportation Research Board and the Institute of Transportation Engineers.

The Work Zone and DMS Program works with a wide variety of sponsors, including the following:

• Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT),
• Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and
