Academic Involvement

Teaching Mission

TTI plays a key role in training and educating students. Over 50 TTI researchers hold joint academic positions at Texas A&M University. The academic faculty facilitate the educational mission of the Institute and help attract students into the transportation profession. Faculty relationships also provide a direct link to scientific expertise, technologies and equipment that provide a competitive edge for TTI’s research program.

The Institute maintains a close association its sister engineering agencies in The Texas A&M University System, the Texas Engineering Experiment Station and the Texas Engineering Extension ServiceTTI has academic relationships with the Texas A&M University Dwight Look College of Engineering, and its Zachry Department of Civil Engineering; the College of Architecture’s Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning; and the George Bush School of Government and Public Service Institute of Science Technology and Public Policy, as well as other academic units within the Texas A&M System and other collaborating universities.

Student Support

One-third of TTI’s staff are students—about half are undergraduates and half are graduate students.  Students employed at TTI could be studying any of these disciplines related to the field of transportation:

  • Agriculture
  • Computer Science
  • Construction Science
  • Economics and Finance
  • Engineering
  • Engineering Technology
  • Landscape Architecture
  • Planning
  • Public Policy
  • Statistics
  • Transportation Policy

Southwest Region University Transportation Center (SWUTC) is one of 10 competitively awarded regional transportation centers. A part of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) University Transportation Centers Program (UTC), the Center supports economic growth and trade; enhances mobility, accessibility and efficiency; promotes safety; and develops the transportation workforce. Other Center partners are The University of Texas at Austin, Texas Southern University, Louisiana State University, and University of New OrleansSWUTC has invested heavily in the development of human capital, creating a “pipeline” process, which takes students at secondary school levels, adds high school and bachelor’s degree programs and culminates in graduate specialties in transportation science and engineering.  Learn more about the SWUTC‘s educational and student support initiatives.

Regional Divisions

The Institute forms partnerships with other universities through regional divisions, which allow greater focus on region-specific transportation solutions.  TTI has regional divisions established at the following universities:
