Why Girls Still Matters in Season 2

Last night was a huge lady-centric night for television with the delightful Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosting the Golden Globes, the premiere of season two of the criminally underwatched Enlightened starring a terrific Laura Dern (PLEASE WATCH THIS SHOW) and, as I’m sure you’ve seen from the posters, billboards and magazine ads -- season two of Girls also premiered.

Thoughts on the Golden Globes - Girls Literally Ruled

Last night, I ended up watching the Golden Globes in real time (with the commercials too.) The reason why that was possible was because of twitter and because I was having such a good time watching the show.  It felt lighter than in years past.  I am guessing a lot of that had to do with the tone that Amy Poehler and Tina Fey in their terrific opening monologue (which you can see below and is worth another watch.)  They told some really funny jokes and the one I enjoyed most was their statement of support for Kathryn Bigelow.  "When it comes to torture I trust the lady that spent 3 years married to James Cameron."  Awesome.

Critics and Film Lovers Respond to Kathryn Bigelow Snub

After Kathryn Bigelow’s name wasn’t announced for Best Director during yesterday’s Oscar nominations, film and entertainment critics as well as movie lovers were outraged causing a vast social media discussion of why Bigelow was snubbed.  Some mentioned sexism, the mostly male based Oscar voting body and the discussion of torture surrounding Zero Dark Thirty.

Guest Post: How to Do an Abortion Plotline

When Amy tearfully asked Drew, “Do I look normal?” following her abortion procedure in the latest episode of Parenthood, it spoke to the narratives often pushed by the anti-choice movement: That abortion is not only damaging and shameful, but also irreparably changes a woman.

2 of 15 Films in Berlin Competition Line Up Directed by Women

The Berlin International Film Festival announced their full competition line up for the Golden Bear. Two of the nine films from this most recent announcement are directed by women. As we previously reported, 0 of the 7 (there is one special screening) earlier announced films in competition were directed by women.  While this is better than the 0 that were at Cannes last year, 2 out of 16 is still too low.

Oscar nominations were announced this morning and per usual there were the surprises, both of the good and bad variety. Nine year old Quvenzhané Wallis becomes the youngest Best Actress nominee for Beasts of the Southern Wild, Kathryn Bigelow shockingly did not receive a Best Director nomination for Zero Dark Thirty and the much lauded film about sexual assualt in the military The Invisible War received a Best Documentary nomination.
