Shop Here on Purpose (S.H.O.P.) is the City of Denton's campaign to educate our community about the positive impacts of shopping in Denton. Whether you are a Denton resident or not, you can spend money here and make an impact on the bottomline. S.H.O.P. encourages those who live and work in Denton to make a conscious effort to shop here; the program is aimed at empowering the community to help itself.
When you shop here on purpose, you support your community in two ways. First, you support our local business owners. When we have strong, healthy businesses, they are able to provide more jobs and purchase more from other local businesses. The second way you support the community when you shop, is by the sales tax generated from your purchase. Each time you spend money here—on dining, retail, entertainment, and more—you are charged 8.25% sales tax. A portion of that sales tax (1.5%) goes into the City’s General Fund to support vital community services such as police, fire, streets, libraries and parks. Keep in mind, shopping here means not shopping online. When we shop online, no tax is created.
Denton is becoming a retail destination. We attract shoppers from outlying areas, who are paying sales tax on their purchases in Denton. Of course, the reverse is true, when we shop in other cities, we're supporting its growth. Remember to purchase whatever you can in Denton. It's the right thing to do.
