Regional trade agreements

Regional trade agreements (RTAs) have become increasingly prevalent since the early 1990s. As of15 June 2014, some 585 notifications of RTAs (counting goods, services and accessions separately) had been received by the GATT/WTO. Of these, 379 were in force. What all RTAs in the WTO have in common is that they are reciprocal trade agreements between two or more partners. Information on RTAs notified to the WTO is available in the RTA Database.

The WTO also receives notifications from WTO members regarding preferential trade arrangements (PTAs). In the WTO, PTAs are unilateral trade preferences. Information on PTAs notified to the WTO is available in the PTA Database.

Facts and figures  back to top

As of 15 June 2014, some 585 notifications of RTAs (counting goods, services and accessions separately) had been received by the GATT/WTO. Of these, 412 notifications were made under Article XXIV of the GATT 1947 or GATT 1994; 39 under the Enabling Clause; and 134 under Article V of the GATS. Of these 585 RTAs, 379 were in force.

The overall number of RTAs in force has been increasingly steadily, a trend likely to be strengthened by the many RTAs currently under negotiations. Of these RTAs, Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and partial scope agreements account for 90%, while customs unions account for 10%.

For up-to-date information on WTO figures on RTAs currently in force, please consult the summary tables contained in the RTA Database.

These WTO figures correspond to 436 physical RTAs (counting goods, services and accessions together), of which 249 are currently in force.
