You’ll come out of this one-day Masterclass with a detailed understanding of investigative journalism, from start to finish. You will be taken through the ways in which you can discover compelling, important and moving stories by finding contacts and sources in Australia or overseas. Independent journalist and Guardian columnist Antony Loewenstein will teach you how to ask the hard questions and how to gain the courage to find a story that matters. Touching on issues such as: is investigative journalism still relevant in the 21st century and why? Students will be shown how to find information that PR people, governments and businesses don’t want you to see, via traditional and social media outlets. This course gives you the skills and confidence to uncover what the powerful want you to ignore.

Course description

The course will be practical, hands-on and interactive. Participants will be taken through some of the finest investigative stories of the last decades, from the mainstream and independent media, taught how to think of stories and find the angles and leads to pursue them and given practical skills, such as interviewing techniques, to maximise the strength of your work.

Topics covered on the day include:

  • How to find a story to investigate; the practical realities of sourcing a story, contacts and documents
  • What is investigative journalism in the digital age? How do you use social media effectively to research stories?
  • Interviewing and research skills
  • Managing huge amounts of research material into a compelling piece of journalism
  • Managing expectations of the story’s response
  • How to keep the pressure on powerful interests, manage any pushback and stay focused in the face of intimidation

Tutor profile

Antony Loewenstein is an independent Australian journalist, documentarian and blogger who has written for The BBC, The Nation, Huffington Post and Haaretz, amongst many others. He is a weekly Guardian columnist and the author of three bestselling books, My Israel Question, The Blogging Revolution and Profits of Doom: How Vulture Capitalism is Swallowing the World, co-writer of For God’s Sake and co-editor of Left Turn and After Zionism: One State for Israel and Palestine.
