SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — Soda makers like Coca Cola, Pepsico and Dr. Pepper/Snapple and others spent millions of dollars to defeat a soda tax in San Francisco.
The Coca-Cola beverage company alone spent nearly $6 million, according to MapLight, a research organization that tracks political spending.
Pepsico came in a close second by spending over $4.4 million. The Dr. Pepper Snapple group spent $1.8 million. Red Bull North America spent $139 thousand, while the Sunny Delight beverage company spent $39 thousand.
The tax was defeated in San Francisco, but a similar measure passed with ease in Berkeley.
