Exclusive: Cowboys Romo Getting 12-Hour Daily Treatment

IRVING (105.3 THE FAN) – Tony Romo’s efforts to play Sunday against the visiting Cardinals has the Cowboys quarterback hoping to participate in Saturday’s walk-through, preparing to wear a “double-flak jacket” in the game and taking 12 hours of daily treatment beginning at 6:30 a.m. at his home and at the team’s headquarters, sources tell me.
Romo has not practiced this week and as of early this morning, it’s possible he won’t practice today, either. I’ve got indications that if the QB is listed as high as “questionable” this afternoon that it should be taken as a sign of progress.
Romo is trying to manage the pain and increase his functionality after taking a violent knee to the back in Monday’s loss to the Redskins. Nearly around-the-clock therapy (with sleep also important to his recovery from what is obviously something more than a back contusion) is part of that, as is his usual protective jacket that is being reinforced. The Cowboys doctors will also include consideration of a pain-killing medication to get Romo through Sunday, should he get the nod over backup Brandon Weeden, who has taken all the first-team snaps this week.
“If it turns out to be just a pain tolerance I will play,” said Romo, expressing great faith in Dallas’ medical staff to guide him. “That part has never been an issue. It will be about your ability to be productive in some fashion. That part of it we will continue to evaluate.”
Amid all this, the Cowboys truly don’t know if Romo will be able to go just yet.
“We don’t know if Tony’s playing,” coach Jason Garrett said. “You get a lot of initial reports from really well-intended people who say, ‘I think he’s out for four weeks.’ And then he comes in the next day, ‘Boy, he’s moving around, maybe it’s not.’ That’s really how we deal with it. We get a lot of feedback from the player. We look at them and see if they can function and then you kind of make your decisions as you go.”
