Portfolio, provided by NextCapital, aggregates financial information from your brokerage accounts and provides news content related to your investments. In order to provide this service, NextCapital must share your financial information with Dow Jones. By signing up to use Portfolio, you authorize NextCapital to share information relating to you with Dow Jones, and you acknowledge that you have read and agreed to the Portfolio privacy policy and terms and conditions.
A: The new portfolio tool will sync with your existing, real brokerage accounts and automatically pull that information into a single interface. You can see extensive, current and historical performance data for your holdings, either combined or by individual account or holding. You can label and organize your accounts by type or your investment goals. You’ll also see relevant news headlines about your positions, with special flags denoting the most important news affecting your portfolio.
A: You must be a subscriber to the Wall Street Journal. You will use the same online credentials for portfolio as for your Wall Street Journal account. You will, however, be able to log out of portfolio without logging out of wsj.com.
A: When you first sign up, you’ll be asked to select your brokerage institution and enter your user credentials for that institution. The system then syncs with that brokerage and shows all of the accounts you have, with your positions. You can check your data and categorize your accounts, and repeat the process for additional institutions or accounts.
A: Yes. The system is powered by a company – NextCapital Inc. -- that since 1997 has been providing similar functionality for other financial institutions. Your brokerage credentials are encrypted and never stored or shared.
A: Your portfolio data will be viewable on special pages at wsj.com. To see them, you must be logged in as a subscriber *and* you will be prompted to re-enter your password to view them. Note that your portfolio credentials and your WSJ subscription credentials are the same.
A: The system supports the majority of significant brokerages. If you happen to have accounts not supported by the system, you can manually enter those accounts and holdings into the tool.
A: Remember, there is no problem with your core account at your financial institution. But if the data reflected in the portfolio tool differs from your actual holdings, customer service help is available. Usually, the differences will result from differences in your cost basis, which can be adjusted manually after your new portfolio has been created. Similarly, some total return calculations might differ slightly from those at your individual institutions, because of variations in how those calculations are made.
A: Stocks, ETFs and mutual funds. At a future date, the system will support bonds and other asset classes.
A: It depends on the asset. Stocks and ETF prices are updated intraday. Mutual funds update after the market closes. If you make trades or other changes to your brokerage accounts, those changes should be reflected within 24 hours.
A: Information on your holdings is securely stored by NextCapital, so it can provide updated prices and performance calculations. In order to provide news that is tailored to your portfolio, holdings information will be temporarily passed to Wall Street Journal Digital Network computers. It will not be stored. Your information will not be used by the Wall Street Journal for ad targeting. For a full explanation of NextCapital' privacy and data policies, click here.
A: For the moment, those will continue to exist, and will not be connected to your new portfolio with real account data.
A: Portfolio is supported in Internet Explorer 9 and above, as well as within Chrome, Firefox and Safari. We will be supporting IE8 in the near future.
