WKYC History

WKYC Channel 3 has a rich broadcast heritage. We first went on the air as WNBK on October 31, 1948 as an NBC owned-and-operated station and have been affiliated with NBC ever since. We have a long history of excellence in local programming including shows like “Barnaby”, highest-rated, locally produced show ever, and “The Mike Douglas Show” which went on to be syndicated nationally. Over the years we have been the first station in Northeast Ohio to broadcast in color, the first to broadcast in stereo, the first to add closed captioning for the hearing impaired and the first to broadcast a digital signal. Our news teams have won countless regional Emmy awards, and several local and national awards for our reporting and community service as a station. In November of 1995, WKYC was purchased by Gannett, Co. Inc. and to this day, Channel 3 remains part of the Gannett Broadcast family.
