Killing at club brings murder charge

A man has been charged with an open count of murder in the first degree and an attempt to commit a felony (another first-degree murder) following an altercation at Club 203 east of Moriarty in the early morning hours of Oct. 25.

Both in District 1 Commission race have experience

Regardless of who wins the Nov. 4 election, residents will see a familiar face sitting in the Torrance County Commission District 1 seat. Incumbent Lonnie Freyburger, a Democrat, will face off against former commissioner Jim Frost, a Republican. Frost served on the county commission from 2003 to 2010 before term limits went into effect. After sitting out a term he is seeking to return.

County to install 6 new fire hydrants

The Torrance County Commission formalized a contract with the city of Moriarty to purchase and install six fire hydrants for Heritage Road, which runs east off N.M. 41 to the city's rodeo arena and Moriarty Elementary School. The fire hydrants, at an estimated $3,890 each, will cost approximately $24,000 but as a precaution Moriarty asked the county to contribute up to $30,000.

Ready, aim, chunk

Against a picture-perfect, sky-blue backdrop New Mexicans old and young gathered in a field west of Estancia to eat funnel cakes and green chile cheeseburgers, compete in pie-eating contests, take a spin on carnival swings, and, of course, watch a handful of teams compete in the annual Punkin Chunkin.'

Field dedicated to custodian

On a windswept, overcast afternoon last Thursday, community members, town councilors and family visited the Edgewood Soccer Field to witness its dedication as the Steve Williams Athletic Field. Williams, the town's maintenance custodian died unexpectedly in February from complications of a respiratory infection and Type I diabetes. He was 58.
