HELENA — The Montana Department of Agriculture is taking applications for $1 million in grants to help fight noxious weeds.

Noxious weeds are plants that out-compete native species, interfere with crops or cause damage to the environment or property.

A trust fund set up by the Montana Legislature in 1985 allows for payments of up to $75,000 for noxious weed management, research and education.

Grant applications are due by December 1, 2014.

An advisory council will hold grant hearings beginning next March. Department of Agriculture Director Ron de Yong will have final approval.
