Two years after Superintendent Mike Miles admitted he paid administrators too much money, a record number of top officials in Dallas ISD are making more than $100,000 annually.
An analysis by The Dallas Morning News found that 175 administrators had six-figure salaries — up from 130 in Miles’ first year in the district and 111 the year before that.
In addition, Miles awarded his high-ranking deputies with raises this summer that exceed the 3 percent increase teachers received. Excluding Miles, the 25 highest-paid employees got an average salary hike of 14 percent.
The spike in top administrative pay has widened the gap between central office employees and classroom teachers. The average teacher pay this year is $52,806, which, even with the 3 percent pay raise, is still lower than it was four years ago.
“We want our principals and executive directors to have the most competitive salaries in North Texas. We are moving in the same direction for teachers,” Miles said in a statement. “We have a lot of work to do as a school district, and I have very high expectations for every member of our staff, particularly those in leadership roles. They routinely work long hours and are on call 24 hours a day.”
Dallas ISD spokesman Jon Dahlander said that the 3 percent raise for all employees and the new principal evaluation plan were responsible for more people making $100,000.
Another hallmark of Miles’ tenure in Dallas ISD has been his reliance on young, inexperienced employees in top administrative jobs. Six DISD employees age 30 or younger make more than $100,000; no one that age made that much under former Superintendent Michael Hinojosa.
Although Miles has pledged to weed out employees who landed jobs through patronage and personal connections, the analysis by The News found that more than two dozen new hires share similar backgrounds, including working for Teach for America and Dallas education reform groups Commit and The Teaching Trust. Those groups have supported Miles’ efforts in Dallas ISD.

See link below. I am not a teacher; my son just graduated with an IB Diploma from DISD. This article summarizes the stupidity that abounds about teachers. It's no wonder that good students run away from teaching these days: bad pay, no support from administration, unrealistic expectations. I'm sick and tired of having these "know it alls" from business and politics who are gutting public education. I am grateful for my teachers and my child's teachers who supported him and gave him an excellent education in spite of the incompetent adminstrators ( some, not all) that put barriers in the way of education. We have to be involved in school board elections as parents and taxpayers.

Why did the Stupid-Intendent harass Dade today?
-
Thanks, Lara, you are my hero. Matthew, thanks for publishing this petition. It is time Miles left and we allowed teachers to teach and mentor students. It is about relationships and teaching students to love learning and be creative. By the way Miles is a democrat and so is Rawlings. They are both money grabbing selfish individuals.
-
@fed up & miss edu...you both are and ignorant. The demicraps are the ones to blame as they are dangerously liberal and at the point of communism. This blog is for DISD talk and not to come and vent your sorry life. miss edu and Fed up are a shame for education and both make Mikes looks like an angel. Demicraps are running away from Obama and from their own party because they know the democrats got our country in chaos. Stop your venting, we don't want to hear it.
-
Ms. Edu--I blame the overall journalistic tenor on Fox "News" and Rupert Murdoch. This may date me, but I remember when even TV news was journalism.
-
Opening from Celeste's "article: "SWEET MOTHER OF ALL THAT IS HOLY, does this story make me crazy. No need to read it, because I’m going to reprint it all below, with comments." I believe this says it all in regard to EC's journalistic merit. The translation reads like this: "Hey idiots, ignore the occasional well written stories from the DMN. I'm gonna "reprint" and give you a blow by blow commentary on what you need to know. There is absolutely no need for you peons to read anything critically on your own. I'll spoon feed you the information that I deem to be of value. Really, you aren't capable of making an informed decision nor are you able to read with any depth of understanding. Just shut up--I'll tell you what to think." Seriously, EC? Your reportage is pitiful.

"You realize how big DISD, right? It’s a $1.7 billion operation. It’s as big as the e-cig market. It’s a business the size of L.A. Fitness. Oh, and it’s charged with educating the poorest kids in our city. It’s a political punching bag and a media piñata. And half-assessed stories like this one — which in no way get to core issues affecting kids, which never ask other education experts for their take, which only parrot the status-quo snakes who fill the DMN‘s comments section — make it harder to get good people to come here and stay here. You realize this, right? You realize that the paper is, in this way, hurting kids? And many of the editors there are making more than $100k to stand by and watch it happen." -
Thank you Lara for having the courage, strength, intelligence, support and most of all the leadership that we need when no one else will stand up and fight for both students and teachers. Let this petition be a lesson to the mayor, the BOT, the council members and others who are weak and too afraid of someone who is just a person that is not qualified to be in a leadership roll. Again, Thank you Lara, we appreciate what you have done.

No Skin in This Game
Rawlins, Barth, Williams Miles
Evil is evil by any other name.
As you sit designing destruction,
You have no skin in this game.
Your kids or grand kids are not forced to endure instruction
That assumes ALL kids learn the same.
What’s your true motive?
You have no skin in this game.
Your kids or grandkids won’t be affected
When only the young TFA’ers remain.
Tell me again your real agenda?
Since you have No skin in this game.
No you have no skin in this game.
Only dollar signs flash when you think of students at DISD.
As you rain down your terror
With the help of some bought and paid for members of the supporting cast from the BOT.
How can you sleep at night
Knowing your plan and plot is so in errantly wrong?
Let me take time to remind you,
Your date with karma is waiting and it truly won’t be long.
It breaks my heart daily
When DMN touts DISD success with such vibrant refrain,
Grisby, Celeste and the remainder of the supporting cast,
Who have NO skin in this game.
May what you have done to teachers and kids
Come back to bite you, when the public’s eyes become open and they begin to affix true blame.
You are awaking a sleeping giant,
Those that DO have skin in THIS game. -
WE ALL WORK LONG HOURS AND ARE ON CALL 24 HOURS A DAY!!!

-
How much money has Miles deposited from the thousands he made at Focal Point?
-
175 administrators who were already making over $100,000 and were secretly given 14% raises. They live lavish life styles in beautiful homes in the Highland Park area and in gated communities. While teachers are in crowded classrooms, underpaid, overworked, paying several hundred dollars monthly for high insurance premiums for family on a lousy 3% raise.
Where are our leaders? Where are the parents who go to work and work 8-12 hours a day just to keep food on the table and a roof over their heads? Do you not care how you are being used? It's your TAX DOLLARS! -
Interesting article. It reinforces Marthew Hagg's article.
-
approve the 3% for teachers. How can you as elected representatives sleep at night while allowing such an injustice? How long are you going to allow this to continue? Employees do need to protest and perhaps there would be some action on the part of the board if protest signs showed up outside the board members places of employment demanding they take immediate steps to rectify this corruption. Board members, on an individual basis, need to publicly state where they stand on this issue. What Miles is doing should be a criminal act!!
-
Miles needs to be fired for cause. The board needs to protect taxpayer monies. So WTF is the board going to do?? Did the board approve the 14% increase? They had to
-
The Dallas tax-payers are getting a little upset at FMM about those ridiculous high azz salaries. "Fire Me! Fire ME! You're gonna learn today!
-
My compliments to Matthew Haag for a very eye-opening article (even for me, a teacher who is stuck in this mess). It was full of very interesting FACTS . Anyone who reads this article of facts, and doesn't think that
-
Looks as though FMM is doing things to make the BOT fire him, (gayish cry-baby statement: 'fire me! fire me') so he walk away with a lucrative golden parachute deal. Tony Hayward was the CEO of British Petroleum (BP) during one of the most infamous oil spills in history. He left with a severance package of over $1 million and a pension close to $12 million. Let him go, he need some 💏 .
-
Trustable sources report Mikes and the BOT read these posts and they laugh and ridicule all comments against them. They know they hold your career and can destroy it in a second. Theses are evil people and the DMN is just using you to get free information from you that otherwise the DMN will have to spend thousands to get it. Matthew and Tawnell are aware of it as they rally for Miles and his corrupted unethical treatment if teachers and staff. BE CAREFUL what you post here. It can come back and bite you.
-
Hey! Is my district, is my money. I can do whatever with my money even if I opt to pay high salaries to my staff. They're like loyal puppies and do not dare to question my intentions cause I terminate them. I am invincible and can do whatever I want. Shut up or I will send my police officers after you...you little people.
-
Rollin down ross ave, smokin', sippin' on gin and juice
Laid back $$$ "with my mind on my money and my money on my mind." -
Hey don't forget about the personal connection that Miles has bought in the district by Rawlings and the classy one if you patronage Miles by being in the fellows program you get your own school regardless if you have no clue how to be a administrator.
-
Miles suffers from Selective Memory Loss in this exposed DMN article related to top salaries. He says how he wanted to weed out employees who landed jobs through Patronage and personal connections. Wow!!! Miles has told the story how he was only in the classroom fo two years and a principal for a short time and boom a Superintendent all within a course of 10 years. Now do the math if he did not rise to status on the good ol boy system how can he explain his fast rise to the top in such a short span???? As for personal connections who is the guy that bought in several top cabinet members and principals from Colorado???? That would be Mike Miles.
-
FMM has not paid attention to half the crap he sends out but expects the Eds and principals to shove it down our throats. He sent a Curriculm Alignment to the chain of command that trickled into the classrooms through an email to help with DOLs called Water Cycle slide show by Mike Miles. Do your homework Miles before you shove your cow mess out. Where are the measurables in this "great" boring 67 turn slide show by you. This explains why most of the people under you that attemp to observe us have no idea what they are doing because you have no freaking clue. It only makes sense to you while you have your so call Friday movie night maybe the olive from the pizza became lodged in your eye while writing this Curriculm. You can screw up but we get marked down by clueless administrators for showing common sense.
-
Employee, we know they are coming. We already heard that they sent a letter. They have it in for our outdoor science program. We won't go down without a big, nasty fight. For nearly 20 years the students have had an outdoor science program and it isn't going to be taken away easily or quietly.
-
Watch out Stonewall Jackson...they are truly coming for your garden program. They can't afford to keep it going and they aren't going to let the parents pay for it, as they have for the past 6 years. You have been a squeaky wheel and they are going to squash you. I have been sitting in the meetings where it has been discussed.
-
Great story Matt. It was very informative and an enjoyable read. I liked how you brought it all up about this gang of thieves.

Matt, why did you delete Todd Williams (Miles' partner) comments from the Dallas ISD Administrator's Children's Highway Robbery article. Let's see it was around 1 am or so. When he was taking up for Miles' for giving away money to his friends instead of spending it in the classroom. You know how the 'good ol' boys' do it. smfh
-
Don't forget the money and deals made under the table by our not so trustees. We know it is happening , just can't prove it yet. But it will, eventually come out and I hope there will be prison time for some of these people.
-
Again. Mike Miles lies. He said that central staff would not be getting raises instead I guess they got the equivalent of a another job salary without doing another job. Each of us are doing things that are not in our job description and yet are receiving less money than we did in past years. I despise this man.
-
OMG!!!! 😱 😱 😱 "In addition, Miles awarded his high-ranking deputies with raises this summer that exceed the 3 percent increase teachers received. Excluding Miles, the 25 highest-paid employees got an average salary hike of 14 percent." UNBELIEVABLE!!! That's over $150 million. I can barely pay my carnet on a teacher's salary.
-
Great article on the salaries. I am an Assistant principal in Dallas with experience and over 40. I have the same job duties as my principal with a lot less experience. I make less than most teachers I evaluate, less than the counselors, less than the instructional, coaches. I did not come from TFA or committ. I have kept my principal, out of many situations where he did not know what to do because of lack of experience. I resent like hell these money hungry people that come in, make a mess of the district, destroy our children's education because of their failed policies. dIsd is single handidlt trying to destroy the middle class and our children's future. This is just so ridiculous. They keep us being sued, in the paper and cheating taxpayers out of money. Stupidity all around.
-
Matt, really enjoying the longer, more detailed articles of late, makes you think, want to read again. DISD issues are often given presented in tightly focused, narrowed DMN style. Just can be frustrating knowing there is more to the story. Jeffrey Weiss stated in comment section of latest article that “As for this story: This was as long as there was room in the paper. And likely longer than many readers will be willing to follow.” You are running a business, you need to keep paper viable, we understand.
However, a request to DMN, allow normal 1 to 2 minute read time articles as main posting. Then allow our DISD reporters, Matt and Tawnell, a chance to link an online longform version (linked to narrowed article, more detailed) when they see fit. The longer versions will linger in a reader’s mind, unlike express versions.
Would be a viable alternative to NY Times style many of us appreciate. There are many highly educated readers in Dallas, many of them DISD teachers who would greatly appreciate the “rest of the story” when reporter sees fit to add an online longform version link that includes all content of narrowed version. Keep up the great work Matt and Tawnell. -
It's time to PROTEST teachers. You work entirely too hard to allow Floyd Mike Miles pay his multimillionaires six figure salaries, then secretly give them huge raises and you just sit there and do nothing about it. miss edu, wondering, wonder, justice . . What's it going to be?

We approve everything Mike Miles is doing. There will be more Ganster-like Raids. Read between the lines. A 2 year extension. Dallas ISD is a "Met Standard" district because of Miles' DOL, MRS, and LO strategies. If you don't do them, call Dade and you will find out. Hellooooooooooooo
