The city of Cincinnati and the Mount Airy Neighborhood Enhancement Program are partnering to increase activity in the neighborhood's business district, and their actions will begin with a demolition on Thursday.
The former Klosterman Cleaners building at 5536 Colerain Ave., which has been vacant for more than a year and a half, will be demolished at 1 p.m. tomorrow, according to a notice from the city.
"Community members are celebrating the long-awaited removal of this former dry cleaners from the heart of the business district," the city said in an announcement on Wednesday.
Once the building is gone, the space will become a parking lot for customers of other businesses in the area.
The demolition of the building will cost the city about $15,000, and the resurfacing project that will follow is being funded by the Mount Airy's Neighborhood Business District Improvement funds.
A city spokeswoman said the demolition of the building is a physical sign that things are changing in Mount Airy. She said it's expected to be a morale-booster for the community and it will create better sightlines for police officers who patrol the area.
