Publix Super Markets will pay about $6.8 million to settle a class-action lawsuit relating to background checks of job applicants.
The lawsuit was filed in Tennessee federal court and alleges that Publix did not make disclosures to applicants about the background checks in violation of the Fair Credit Reporting Act, the Lakeland Ledger said. The Publix settlement amounts to $75 for each of the 90,633 people in the suit. After lawyers' fees they'll each get about $48.
As part of the settlement, Publix denied wrongdoing. The company said it agreed to the settlement "because of the substantial expense of litigation ... and the disruption to its business operations," according to legal documents filed in July.
