Golf roundup: Argyle boys lead at regional tournament

POTTSBORO — Argyle’s boys golf team will enter the second round of the Class 3A Region II tournament a few strokes ahead of everybody else.

The Eagles led the field after Monday’s first round at Tanglewood Golf Resort with a total score of 311 — 10 strokes ahead of Texarkana Pleasant Grove.

The top three teams and top three individuals not on an advancing team will move on to the 3A state tournament, which takes place April 28 and 29 at Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort near Bastrop.

Argyle’s Tommy Parker shot 3-over 75 on the par-72 course and heads into the second round with a one-stroke lead.

Argyle’s Colton Katzen was tied for fifth at 5-over 77, while Nick Louy finished Monday’s round tied for seventh place at 6-over 78. Alex Isakson was 9 over and Lance Roden was 11-over after the first round.

Only the top four scores go toward the team’s total score.

Cole Cannon, Aubrey’s sole competitor at the regional tournament, shot 13 over and was tied for 27th. Argyle’s Matt Garnett qualified individually was 11 over. Sanger’s Brendon Cochran shot 22 over.

In the girls 3A Region I tournament, Sanger was tied for ninth with a total score of 444. Melissa leads the tournament with a 71-over 359. Sanger’s Olivia Couch led the Lady Indians with a score of 35-over 107, which puts her in a tie for 34th place.

Becca Adkins shot 111 and Caitlin Humphreys shot 112 for the Lady Indians.

Sanger’s Mahalia Markenzinis finished the round in 114 strokes, and Christine Nelson did it in 129.

Argyle’s Jesse Sheridan was tied for 18th place after she shot 28-over 100, the area’s top finisher. Argyle’s Leyton King tallied a score of 102, while Krum’s Emilia Hull finished Monday’s round with a 115.

 

Guyer’s Ross leads

ABILENE — Conner Ross anchored Guyer’s boys team in the first round of the Class 4A Region I meet at Diamondback Golf Club.

Ross shot 3-over 74 to seize the overall lead heading into today’s final round. Ross held a four-shot lead over Trophy Club Nelson’s Hayden Springer.

Nelson leads the team standings with a combined score of 319. Guyer is six shots back in second place with a total of 325, six shots ahead of Granbury.

Garrett Underwood had Guyer’s next lowest score. Underwood shot 10-over 81 to finish the first round tied for ninth place.

Guyer’s Jeremiah Earle shot 13-over 84, Brady Hanley posted a 15-over 86 and Grant Studdard was at 17-over 88.

The top three teams and top three individuals not on an advancing team will move on to the 4A state tournament, set for April 28 and 29 at Texas.
