Facebook is very popular days. With more than 400 million active users, the social networking site continues to lead in the social networking revolution. Driving down the street on Mulberry today I saw a nice sign outside Hannah's Off the Square which read, "Keep up with us on Facebook and Twitter..." Normally, they have a sign talking about their specials or their next networking event, but this time I was taken by surprised that they were advertising their social networking sites. Of course, I got curious and called Hannah's just to find out why they had posted the message above on their marquee, but I could not reach anyone at their location during the 5 p.m. busy traffic (of course, I will try tomorrow). When I contacted Facebook headquarters to find out how many Denton businesses have started accounts with their site, they replied, "Thank you for your inquiry. We unfortunately do not provide this statistic," said Maureen O'Hara from Facebook Corporate Communications in an e-mail. So I went ahead and conducted an extensive search and found about 400 plus fan pages, groups and profile accounts with anyone from public officials, to government entities, nonprofits, and businesses that are looking to expand their product or service to more customers by adding social networking to their brand. Facebook said they have more than 1.5 million local businesses with active pages on their site, according to their press materials. Of the many Denton entities on Facebook, Rockin Rodeo (Denton) led with 2,317 fans followed by the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival with 2,234 fans. There is also an entity on Facebook called Denton with 8,407 fans, but it is unclear if it is a business, a nonprofit organization or if it is someone who is just dedicated to connecting Dentonites on the page. So here is glimpse of some of the local entities on Facebook as of today: Hannah's Off the Square - 347 fans If you are a local business or organization on Facebook, please let us know by visiting our Fan page at www.facebook.com/pages/Denton-TX/Denton-Record-Chronicle/109340719365

By lunch hour, it was pretty full with customers enjoying their meals while listening to mariachi music courtesy of Mariachi de Oro. Denton Mayor Mark Burroughs; District 1 City Council member, Charlye Heggins, André J. "Frenchy" Rheault from Frenchy's Lawn and Tree and Police Chief Roy Minter stopped in to welcome the 17th El Fenix restaurant to Denton. "I am here representing the people," said a happy Frenchys as he enjoyed his food. CEO and owner Mike Karns said he was excited to finally have a restaurant in Denton. "It was one of the most requested areas, that is why I came here, we are excited about being here," said Karns who purchased the company in 2008 from the family owners. Known for its chips (which are made at the Harry Hines Headquarters in Dallas) and salsa, El Fenix began in 1918. It was founded by Mike Martinez who created a family business after opening the first restaurant in the "Little Mexico" side of town in Dallas. John McBride, Jr., one of the Martinez's family members and presently the chief operation officer for the restaurant chain said the new El Fenix has been busy since Friday when they hosted a special evening with 125 guests, then opened Saturday for dinner and had another soft opening on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. "We fed about 350 people for free yesterday," McBride said talking about the Sunday opening. Here are some photos
