The master of LA noir will talk to John Mullan about corrupt cops, femme fatales and his classic crime novel The Black Dahlia.

When a wannabe starlet is found brutally murdered in a vacant field in Los Angeles, the story make headlines and sparks the biggest manhunt in California history. The plot centres on two cops, Bucky and Lee, who become increasingly obsessed with the case as their investigation uncovers the corruptions of postwar Hollywood.

The Black Dahlia is the first of the LA Quartet series of novels, which includes LA Confidential and The Big Nowhere. Ellroy is currently working on a second LA Quartet, set during the second world war. The first book, Perfidia, will be published in September 2014.
