Labor, Business Groups Struggle Over Guest Worker Issue

The Capitol Hill newspaper Politico reports the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the AFL-CIO are finding it difficult to reach agreement on guest worker provisions for the so-called comprehensive immigration reform bill. A stalemate over the guest worker issue led to the demise of the 2007 amnesty bill.

Sen. Sessions Responds to Pres. Obama's call for amnesty during State of the Union

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), and a member of both the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Senate Immigration Subcommittee, came out against Pres. Obama's call for "comprehensive immigration reform" (amnesty) during his State of the Union address on Tuesday night. Pres. Obama called for a path to citizenship for the nation's 11 million illegal aliens and an expansion of legal immigration.

ICE Agents Demand Meeting with Obama to Discuss Immigration Reform

ICE Union President, Chris Crane, who represents the men and women that are tasked with enforcing the nation's immigration laws, has sent a letter to Pres. Obama asking for a meeting to discuss immigration reform. Last week, President Obama met with business leaders and union officials, including the AFL-CIO, but did not include the National ICE Council.

Since there’s still no "comprehensive immigration reform" bill in either the House or the Senate, there's a lot of uncertainty about what a final bill may look like. But one thing is becoming clear; there are lots of opposing opinions on what should be and shouldn’t be in the bill, and those differences were on display during Wednesday’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing.
