With late summer's box-office hits skewing a bit older than last year's slate, the average movie ticket price in the third quarter was $8.08, reported the National Association of Theatre Owners. That's down 25 cents from the second quarter but up 3.1 percent over the July-September time frame last year when admissions averaged $7.84.
Ticket prices typically drop in the third quarter since premium-priced 3-D titles tend to hit screens in the early part of summer. But with the top five grossing films in the quarter rated PG-13 or R, the period saw more teen and adult moviegoers this year, boosting its average year over year.
"Guardians of the Galaxy" was the number-one flick in the quarter with $319.8 million, followed by "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," "Transformers: Age of Extinction" and "Lucy." By comparison, the family-friendly "Despicable Me 2" and its lower-priced children's and matinee tickets was the top title during the period last year by far with $361.8 million.
