Manufacturing output has increased since 1978 despite a 60 per cent fall in the total workforce, contradicting the view that the sector is disappearing from the UK. The Office for National Statistics found that even though just eight per cent of UK jobs are in manufacturing, compared to 25 per cent in 1978, overall manufacturing output has actually increased.

FTSE LIVE: Traders cheered by rumours ECB is mulling corporate bond-buying spree to boost ailing eurozone economy
Investors are nursing hopes of fresh action by the European Central Bank to support the eurozone economy. It is rumoured to be considering buying corporate bonds on the second-hand market - a step that would help banks free up more of their balance sheets for lending. It may decide on the matter as soon as December, with a view to beginning purchases early next year. Minutes from the Bank of England's latest meeting are due out later.

MONEY NEWS & ADVICE
Savers face another year of low returns before first rise in base rate - and when increases do begin, it will be slow
Andrew Haldane, chief economist at the Bank of England, said: 'Interest rates could remain lower for longer, certainly than I had expected three months ago.' Forecasters at Centre for Economics and Business Research warn savers could wait another 12 months for base rate to rise from 0.5 per cent, where it has been frozen since March 2009.
Revealed: The top ten online scams - and how one victim lost his money to fraudsters who conned all his Facebook friends too...
The ten biggest online scams lost victims across the country £670million over the last year - and this figure is likely to be far higher due to unreported cases, National Fraud Intelligence Bureau data reveals. The case of a victim known only as Chris, who had thousands stolen by fraudsters who rang his bank to gain details and also conned his Facebook friends into sending money too, is highlighted by Get Safe Online Week.
ASK TONY: My 95-year-old mum was mis-sold a £175K investment bond by a shark adviser - and now Skandia won't let her leave without a £1,750 charge!
ASK TONY: The product is manifestly inappropriate and I feel that the levy of a penalty on a mis-sale is contrary to obligations that investors should be treated fairly. Unfortunately, Skandia refuses to budge and insists that there is nothing wrong with the product itself, which is true. I would be happy to pay a charge commensurate with the investment, but not this blatant rip-off!
'We discovered our new home's work guarantees weren't worth the paper they were written on': How to protect yourself from costly bills after you move
When she moved into a new house in North Yorkshire last summer Linda Harrison got the usual big pile of paperwork from her solicitor. When she discovered a conservatory roof was leaking recently, she hunted through it for the guarantee but unfortunately when it came to the time to claim it turned out not to be worth a thing.
Investors plough record amounts into investment trusts - but DIY investing flaw means they may miss out on best deals
Investment trusts are booming, generally outperforming their fund counterparts since the financial crash. Over the past five years the average UK equity income fund has returned 65 per cent, while a typical similar investment trust has returned 85 per cent. It appears investors are cottoning on to this success but many may be missing some crucial information.
MARK SLATER: Six undervalued shares with the potential to become takeover targets
Takeover targets can prove highly profitable investments, but it is always best to be positioned in a stock before it becomes the subject of bid rumours, says leading fund manager Mark Slater. It is much better to stick to your tried-and-tested investment approach and first identify an undervalued share and big isn't always beautiful. He reveals six shares with potential that he likes and explains why.
I lent a friend £6,000 but he stopped making repayments - can I take him to the small claims court if there was no contract?
I lent a friend £6,000 so he could get his finances in gear and to help him start a business when he left his job. He was paying back £600 a month, which dropped to £500, and then stopped altogether. Now he just tells me he is 'trying my best'. I have already given him an extension. This has been going on for almost two years. I would like some advice on the best and cheapest way to proceed if he does not pay the money back.

Volatility brings London's float bandwagon to a shuddering halt as We Buy Any Car reveals: we can't sell any shares
British Car Auctions pulled their plans for a £1.2bn stock market listing. The company blamed the 'volatility in global equity markets' for shelving its float ambitions. The company joins Virgin Money, challenger banker Aldermore and housebuilder Miller Homes in backing out of stock market floats amid faltering demand from potential investors. What had promised to be a bumper year for stock market listings and mega-deals has soured in the wake of wavering confidence about the global economy.

How to get a mortgage when you're self employed: Four steps to avoid getting locked out of the property market
The Office for National Statistics says that more than 4.6 million people are now self-employed - but new research suggests that almost half will struggle to get on to, or up, the housing ladder. Specialist lender Precise Mortgages says four in ten self-employed people state their decision to work for themselves has made it harder to get a decent mortgage. A specialist lender helped Julie Croney (pictured) get the mortgage she needed when she bought her first home earlier this year.
You don't need to wait to find out whether inheritance tax gets cut: Six vital steps to help you avoid IHT
Inheritance tax is back on the political agenda. Last week, Prime Minister David Cameron said the much hated 'death tax' should only be paid by the 'very wealthy'. Jeff Prestridge canvasses opinion on whether inheritance tax should now be overhauled. He also looks at legitimate ways in which the 40 per cent tax can be avoided, outlining six key steps for readers - including our case study Bridget Jones (pictured).
The chart that shows UK shares are near the cheapest they've been in 40 years - but could the Footsie still slide to 5,000?
The FTSE 100 bounced today at the end of a bad week, but the question on investors' lips is whether this correction is a buying opportunity or the start of something much worse. The CAPE chart pictured highlights how the UK market is near the cheapest it has been over almost 40 years. Yet while shares may be cheap they also carry a sizeable risk of falling much further. Simon Lambert takes a look at the investor's dilemma.

The taxman says I owe £791 because it gave me the wrong tax code - but should I have to pay when it's not my fault?
HMRC said I had the wrong tax code and now owe nearly £800. But my last tax code was issued by HMRC itself through the job centre. I am worried that I can't afford to pay it - should I have to when it wasn't my fault? I have worked full time since the age of 16 and have always paid my taxes. I assumed that I had the correct tax code because it had been issued by the job centre.

When will interest rates rise? Triple whammy of low inflation, growth fears and market wobbles send first rate rise forecast back to mid-2015
Expectations of a first interest rate rise have dramatically shifted back to summer 2015, after a triple whammy of low inflation, growth fears and stock and bond market wobbles hit. The Bank's chief economist Andrew Haldane said today he was now more downbeat about the outlook for Britain's economy. 'Put in rather plainer English, I am gloomier,' Mr Haldane said. 'This implies interest rates could remain lower for longer, certainly than I had expected three months ago.'
