Now that the weather is starting to cool off and the leaves are turning into a rainbow of colors, there’s no better time to hit the road for a quick getaway. Here are five of the best places, less than two hours away from DFW, where you can have a cozy vacay and soak up the vibrant fall foliage.
Country Woods Inn
420 Grand Ave.
Glen Rose, TX 76043
(817) 279-3002
www.countrywoodsinn.com

The 50-mile drive from Fort Worth to Glen Rose down Highway 67 is a scenic one at any time of the year, but even more so during fall when red oaks, sumac and elm cast a spectrum of colors over the area. And the best way to enjoy nature’s glory is by staying at Country Woods Inn, a property nestled in the woods along the Paluxy River. Accommodations, which start at $100 a night, range from a large main lodge to secluded cabins and even a restored railroad car. You can easily stay entertained here without leaving the property. There’s everything from biking and hiking to canoeing and fishing right out the door. You can also stroll down the road to Glen Rose’s historic downtown filled with quaint shops and restaurants. Of course, no trip to the area would be complete without a visit to Fossil Rim Wildlife Center or Dinosaur Valley State Park.

Sabor a Pasion Country House and Bistro
110 Anderson County Road
Palestine, TX 75803
(903) 729-9500
www.saborapasion.com

East Texas is the best area in the state for fall colors, and a great way to enjoy it is by taking a weekend train excursion between Palestine and Rusk on the Texas Star Railroad. For lodging and dining, you can’t beat the charming ambiance of the Sabor Country House, where you’ll find beautifully appointed rooms and cabins in a stunning vineyard setting starting at $150 nightly. While you’re at the inn, try to get in on one of chef Simon Webster’s cooking classes. Or have a go at hooking a 200-pound trophy alligator gar with Garzilla Guide Service. And don’t miss seeing the fall color show at the Davey Dogwood Park where the dogwoods turn deep red for the season.
