The 50-mile drive from Fort Worth to Glen Rose down Highway 67 is a scenic one at any time of the year, but even more so during fall when red oaks, sumac and elm cast a spectrum of colors over the area. Winnsboro, only around 75 miles east of Dallas, is so beautiful during the fall that it holds an annual Autumn Trails festival every weekend during the month of October. Arts and crafts, cookouts, trail rides, antique car parades and classic car shows are just a few of the activities going on during the month-long celebration. An ideal place to spend the night is at Thee Hubbell House, a beautiful southern plantation estate. Here you can choose from five gorgeous rooms inside of the stately mansion or from one of the rooms in a carriage house located on the property. Rates start at $94 a night. The spectrum of color from the oaks, maple, hickory, redbud and pine make for an ideal photo opt. For something a bit offbeat, consider spending the night in an old 1930s jail cell situated in Clifton’s historic downtown district—around 90 miles from DFW. This decked-out jail house comes complete with a rooftop patio, a gas fire pit, a vintage record player and even a pair of handcuffs. A night of solitary confinement here will only set you back $155 on weekdays or $175 on weekends. During your incarceration, you might enjoy visiting Clifton’s art galleries, antique shops and wineries.
